WINTON — You can call it a family affair.

Honey Bugs Embroidery & Bowtique recently opened its doors on Main Street.

The business is owned by a trio of family members, including husband and wife team, David and Cathy Spence, and Cathy’s mom, Barbara Piland.

The family connection doesn’t end there as Cathy’s cousin and Barbara’s niece, Jeannie Brown, owns and operates Hair Fashions next door within the same building.

Open since August, an official ribbon cutting was held last weekend to dedicate Honey Bugs, named by combining the nicknames of the Spence’s children, Mandy, 7, and Clayson, 4.

The store offers custom embroidery, hats and shirts (including polo shirts), apparel decorating, graphics and garment print. “Walk in” items for embroidery are also welcomed.

The boutique in the same space features handcrafted sterling silver jewelry by Ken Attkisson of Edenton, pocketbooks/handbags, soy, wax and all natural candles from Candles of Eden, children’s toys and apparel and school supplies. Homemade bows (hence the “bow” in “Bowtique”) are also available for purchase.

The building that houses both Honey Bugs and Hair Fashions was constructed in the 1950s and was formally Down’s propane gas business and general store. Joan Downs, whose mother-in-law operated that business, was in attendance for the ribbon cutting.
