Willie Ray Harrell Sr., 60, of Reynoldson Road, Gates, died Sunday, August 23, 2009 in Sentara Norfolk General Hospital. A former sheriff of Gates County, he had retired from Allied Collied of Suffolk and was a member of Reynoldson Baptist Church. Surviving are his wife, Carolyn Winslow Harrell; a son, Will Harrell of Winterville; a daughter, April Newman of Smithfield, VA; four grandchildren; a brother, Roy Harrell of Gatesville; and two sisters, Doris Shingleton and Barbara Whitley, both of Gates. Funeral services were held Aug. 26 in Reynoldson Baptist Church by the Revs. Todd Higginson and Billy Presley. Burial followed in the church cemetery with Miller Funeral Home, 304 Main Street, Gatesville, handling arrangements. Friends may join the family at the residence.
