WINTON – The memory of a friend and the care of his daughter spurred them.

Recently, a group of people throughout the region and from other parts of North Carolina and Virginia came together to honor the memory of Detrick L. White and provide for the care of his daughter, De’Andra White. The inaugural Detrick L. White Softball Tournament Classic was held in Winton August 1.

“We did this for two reasons,” said Caddares Manley, one of the organizers of the event. “First, we want to honor the Detrick’s memory and secondly, we want to provide a scholarship for his daughter.”

Three teams and more than 150 fans gathered at the first classic. They enjoyed free food, drinks and music.

The teams came from Hertford County, Plymouth and as far away as Raleigh. The “Undertakers” which is a team White played for, was the winner of the inaugural event.

School supplies were also donated by Jordan Grove Baptist Church, White’s home church.
