AHOSKIE – Grab the children, a chair and head out to the Ahoskie Creek Amphitheater.

On Friday night, August 7 the amphitheater will be host to a 30’ inflatable screen as the Town of Ahoskie, the Ahoskie Chamber of Commerce and Wal-Mart host “Movies in the Park.”

The event is free to the public and something Ahoskie Mayor Linda Blackburn and Town Manager Tony Hammond believe has the potential to become a regular attraction at Ahoskie Creek.

“We’re always looking for ways to use the amphitheater,” said Mayor Blackburn. “That project is one of the best I’ve ever been involved with in the town. It’s an exciting thing to have.

“It’s not built to sit there like a monument,” she continued. “We want to use it and this is another way to do that and, at the same time, offer something nice for the citizens.”

The family atmosphere will be perfect to allow the people of the community to come together with their children to enjoy a night outdoors while seeing the movie “Shrek.”

“With the way the economy is, a lot of people can’t get out for a night, but this will be a free event that will allow families to have a night out at the movies,” Mayor Blackburn said.

The event is being co-sponsored by the Ahoskie Chamber of Commerce and Wal-Mart.

Ahoskie Chamber Director Jerry Castelloe said he was pleased to see the community have an opportunity to use the amphitheater.

“The Ahoskie Creek Amphitheater is an asset to our community and we’re looking forward to being a part of this event which will allow the public to come out and enjoy the park and an evening of family fun.”

If the event is successful, Mayor Blackburn said the town was interested in making it a series of events which would allow the amphitheater to be home to a movie night on some regular basis.

“We want to provide opportunities for our citizens and we think this could be a terrific opportunity to do that,” Mayor Blackburn said.
