MILLENNIUM — A Sunday morning accident near here has left two victims in critical condition.

Jeffery Miller, 30, of Ahoskie and eight-year-old Bruce Jernigan of Colerain are in ICU (Intensive Care Unit) at Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville, both listed in critical condition according to North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper W.T. Smith. Smith, who investigated the accident, said both victims were airlifted by East Care to the Greenville hospital.

The accident was reported at 9:30 a.m. at the intersection of NC 11 Bypass and NC 11 Business (Millennium Road).

There, according to Trooper Smith, Vivian Lynn Miller, 53, of Aulander had stopped her 2006 Suzuki passenger car at the stop sign at the end of the Millennium Road.

“She (Mrs. Miller) looked to her right where two vehicles, traveling north on NC 11 bypass, were nearing the intersection,” Trooper Smith said. “She waited for those two vehicles to clear the intersection, but she apparently did not look back to her left and as her vehicle was in the process of accessing NC 11 Bypass, it was struck by a vehicle headed south.”

That vehicle, a 2001 Chevrolet Suburban, was operated by 30-year-old Crystal Leigh Renee Barnes of Winterville.

Her vehicle struck the Miller car in the left side passenger’s door and left rear quarter panel, Smith said. Jeffery Miller, the son of the driver, was seated in the left rear passenger’s seat.

Jernigan, the driver’s grandson, was seated as the right-rear passenger.

Trooper Smith praised the efforts of the Millennium Volunteer Fire Department for working to free the victims trapped inside the Miller vehicle.

Mrs. Miller and her husband, 53-year-old Daniel Walter Miller (a front seat passenger), were not seriously injured.

Neither was Barnes. Smith said charges were pending against Mrs. Miller. Also responding to the accident scene were Hertford County EMS and Lewiston EMS.
