MT. OLIVE – Ahoskie and Wayne County split a Senior American Legion doubleheader here Saturday.

Ahoskie Post 102 claimed a 7-4 victory over Wayne County in game one while Post 11 rallied for a 7-6 win in the second contest.

In the first game, Edward Joyner was 4-for-4 and Aaron Hoggard 3-for-4 as Ahoskie claimed a 7-4 victory.

Ahoskie opened the scoring with two runs in the first frame. Joyner and Hoggard had consecutive singles. Joyner then scored on a Gavin Mizelle RBI-double. Hoggard scored on a single by Chad Gurganus to make it 2-0.

Post 102 plated three more in the top of the second stanza. Zeek Williams singled before Eli Spruill did the same. Williams came around to score on a Joyner RBI-single Spruill and Joyner both came home after Hoggard delivered a base hit, giving Ahoskie a 5-0 advantage.

Wayne County finally got on the board in the bottom of the third inning when they scored twice and cut the Ahoskie lead to 5-2.

Ahoskie added another run in the top of the fourth inning. Dakota Young doubled and scored on a Joyner RBI-single to make it 6-2.

Post 11 sent home one run in the bottom of the inning to trim the Ahoskie lead to 6-3.

Ahoskie added another run in the top of the fifth frame. Hoggard doubled and went to third on a Mizelle single. He then scored on a Gurganus sacrifice fly to make it 7-3.

Wayne County scored another run, this time in the bottom of the seventh inning, but Ahoskie held on for the 7-4 victory.

Young pitched four and one-third innings for the win. Dylan Ralph pitched two and one-third innings and Brent Bowen tossed one-third of an inning.

In the second game, Post 102 fell 7-6.

Ahoskie again opened the scoring in the game, plating one run in the top of the first frame.

Spruill doubled and then scored when Mizelle reached on an error to make it 1-0. Wayne County knotted the game in the home half of the same inning.

Ahoskie surged ahead again with two runs in the top of the second stanza. Mitchell Godwin singled and Bowen was hit by a pitch. Godwin scored on an RBI-single by Spruill. Bowen then came around on a Joyner RBI-single to make it 3-1.

Post 11 added two of their own in the bottom of the second to once again force a tie.

Post 102 added another run in the third frame when Hoggard singled, Mizelle doubled and Ralph walked to load the bases. Young drew a bases-loaded walk to give Ahoskie a 4-3 lead.

Wayne County took the lead for the first time in the bottom of the fourth when two runs gave them a 5-4 advantage.

Ahoskie bounced right back, scoring a run in the top of the fifth frame. Kyle Hughes doubled and then scored on a Ralph double.

Post 102 then took the lead in the top of the sixth. Spruill walked and Joyner doubled. Spruill then came home when Hoggard singled to make it 6-5.

Post 11, however, responded with two runs in the bottom of the sixth and held on for a 7-6 win.

Ahoskie used four pitchers in the contest including Joe Harrell, Williams, Hoggard and Gurganus.

Post 102 recorded 27 hits in the doubleheader paced by Joyner and Hoggard who recorded six hits each. Spruill added four hits while Mizelle had three. Gurganus and Young had two hits each.

“We hit the ball really well today,” Post 102 Head Coach David Ellis said. “We lost another one-run game in the second game. This was a good tune-up for the playoffs for us.”

Ahoskie finished the regular season 5-16.
