WINTON – Hertford County law enforcement officers have made an arrest in a month-old larceny case.

According to Hertford County Sheriff Juan Vaughan, a man allegedly was seen removing items from a residence on River Road on May 1. A neighbor saw the incident and reported it to authorities.

After his work, sheriff’s Investigator Bryan Pearce drew warrants for the arrest of Benjamin Hyman Swain, 43, of East Railroad Street in Walstonburg for larceny and conspiracy in the theft of $1,500 worth of copper.

Swain was allegedly seen removing items from the residence on River Road which later turned out to be copper.

“We drew warrants on him, but couldn’t locate him,” Sheriff Vaughan said. “We entered his name in the National Crime Information Center so that anyone who stopped him would know we had warrants for his arrest.”

A break in the case came last Wednesday when he was stopped in Hampton, Virginia and then taken into custody for the warrants held in Hertford County. Officers from Hertford County took him into custody on Thursday where he appeared before a magistrate and was placed in the Hertford County Detention Center under a $50,000 cash bond.

He will make his first appearance in District Court on Tuesday morning.
