A line of thunderstorms ripped through the Roanoke-Chowan region Tuesday afternoon, leaving nearly an inch of rainfall and some damage throughout the area.

The heaviest damage came in Northampton County where a couple of areas of damage were storm-related.

Northampton County Emergency Coordinator Tim Byers said there was a barn fire near Seaboard on NC 186 believed to be caused by a lightning strike. The barn was unused at the time.

Byers said Rich Square Police Chief Bobo Roye reported flooding and hail in that town. Power lines and trees were also downed due to the storm.

In Bertie County, Emergency Management Coordinator Rickey Freeman said a home in the Midway-Merry Hill area of the county was damaged when a large limb fell from a tree. The limb crashed through the ceiling and into the kitchen.

“The residents were in the home, but not in the kitchen so no one was injured,” Freeman reported.

Freeman said the Merry Hill-Midway Fire Department removed the limb and placed a tarp over the home.

According to Hertford County Emergency Management Director Charles Jones, no damage was reported in the county.
