MURFREESBORO – An outdoor concert in Murfreesboro June 11 – three days before the Sunday, June 14 national celebration of Flag Day – will feature the U.S. Navy Fleet Jazz Ensemble.

The concert, which is free to the public, will be from 6:30-8 p.m. on the lawn of the Roberts-Vaughan Village Center, 116 E. Main Street.

Concert-goers are encouraged to bring lawn chairs or a picnic blanket, said Murfreesboro Chamber Executive Director Sherry Sullens.

The June 11 concert will be the first of a series to be held “every other Thursday night,” Sullens said.

The Fleet Jazz Ensemble, led by Chief Musician Roy Brown, is an 18-member jazz group performing many diverse styles, a Navy spokesman said.

The band’s repertoire ranges from the timeless classics of big band swing to Count Basie and Duke Ellington to the exciting contemporary jazz literature of Bob Mintzer and Matt Catingub.

Chief Musician Brown, of Riverside, Calif., began his military career with the U.S. Marine Corps in 1993. He served with the 1st Marine Division Band at Camp Pendleton and the 3rd Marine Aircraft Wing Band at Marine Corps Air Station Miramar.

After crossing over to the Navy in 2001, Chief Brown served with Navy Band Southwest in San Diego and the U.S. 7th Fleet Band in Yokosuka, Japan.

He assumed his current duties with U.S. Fleet Forces Band as ceremonial conductor and Fleet Jazz Ensemble unit leader in November 2007.

Brown received his bachelor of arts degree in Music from the University of California, Riverside.

His awards include the Navy and Marine Corps Achievement Medal (4 awards), the Good Conduct Medal (4 awards), the National Defense Service Medal (2 awards), the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Global War on Terrorism Medal, and the Rifle Expert Medal.
