Ahoskie edges Post 160

AHOSKIE – Ahoskie edged Pitt County with two out in the bottom of the ninth here Saturday night.

With the game deadlocked at 3-all, Grayson Toms drew a bases-loaded walk to help Ahoskie American Legion Post 102’s senior team to a 4-3 victory over Post 160.

The game was deadlocked heading into the bottom of the ninth. Aaron Hoggard then doubled down the left-field line with one out. Jacob Dunlow was issued an intentional walk. Then, with two out, Josh Morris walked to load the bases.

Dylan Ralph (a pinch runner for Hoggard) then scored when Toms drew the walk for the walk-off victory.

Chad Gurganus pitched seven innings for Post 102, allowing just two runs on five hits while striking out five. Brandon Warren then tossed the final two, picking up the victory. He allowed one run on one hit and struck out four.

“Chad Gurganus pitched a great game for us,” said Post 102 Head Coach David Ellis. “Brandon Warren then came in and shut them down. We battled the whole game.

“We had a great team effort,” he added. “We played good defense. We needed a win and, hopefully, this will give us momentum to keep playing well.”

Ahoskie opened the scoring with a run in the bottom of the first frame.

Travis Ellis walked and stole second before Gavin Mizelle got aboard via a walk. Ellis scored when Dunlow singled, making it 1-0.

Pitt County surged ahead with two runs in the top of the fifth, but Ahoskie responded in the home half of the same inning.

Joe Harrell singled and went to second on a wild pitch. He scored on a Mizelle RBI-double that tied the game at 2-all.

Post 102 scored in the bottom of the seventh to take the lead.

Brent Bowen walked and Mizelle singled on the infield. Both runners advanced on a Hoggard groundout. Bowen then scored when Dunlow had an RBI-groundout, giving Post 102 a 3-2 edge.

Pitt County tied the score with a run in the top of the eighth.

Overall, Ahoskie pounded out nine hits. Mizelle, Hoggard and Dunlow had two hits each.

Ahoskie improved to 1-3 after the win.
