Durham defeats Ahoskie in twin bill

DURHAM – Durham Post 7 knocked off Ahoskie American Legion Post 102 by counts of 9-5 and 10-0 here Saturday.

It was the Senior American Legion opener for the local team.

In game number one, Post 7 breaks open a 6-5 game with three runs in the bottom of the sixth as they went on to a 9-5 victory.

Ahoskie opened the scoring with two runs in the top of the first frame.

Eli Spruill walked just before Gavin Mizelle belted a two-run homer to give Post 102 a 2-0 lead.

Durham then scored four times in the bottom of the first to take a 4-2 lead.

Durham added two runs in the bottom of the second to surge ahead 6-2 after two innings.

Ahoskie scored two runs in the top of the third inning.

Zeek Williams was hit by a pitch, Travis Ellis singled and Spruill walked to load the bases. Williams scored on an Aaron Hoggard RBI-fielder’s choice while Ellis was plated on a Chad Gurganus RBI-single to close the gap to 6-4.

Ahoskie scored its final run in the top of the sixth when Hoggard had a solo homerun to close the gap to 6-5.

Post 7, however, scored three times in the bottom of the sixth to establish the final.

Post 102 used three pitchers – Brent Bowen, Josh Morris and Brandon Warren.

In the second game, Post 7 scored seven times in the fourth inning and went on to beat Ahoskie 10-0.

Durham scored two in the first, seven in the fourth and one in the sixth to close out the contest.

Ahoskie used four pitchers in the game including Mizelle, Jacob Dunlow, Dakota Young and Dylan Ralph.

Ahoskie had six hits in the two games.

Head Coach David Ellis said, “Durham is very good. I was pleased with our effort. The first game was close, we just have to hit the ball.

“In the second game, we just made too many errors which you can’t do and expect to win,” he added.
