ASKEWVILLE – Hundreds turned out for the first-ever Askewville Family Fest here Saturday.

The day began with what many believe to be the first parade ever hosted by the small central Bertie County town. The parade included local officials, vintage cars and a number of horse and buggies, including one that carried Mayor John Pierce and members of the town board.

Bertie County Sheriff Greg Atkins and Chief Deputy John Holley were among those local officials who participated in the event.

“I think it went very well,” Mayor Pierce said. “There was a good turnout and a steady flow of people coming and going.”

Following the parade, the community gathered at the Askewville Community Building for yard sales, a car show and the opportunity to have children play on the playground at the Askewville More at Four Site.

White Oak Medical Transport also provided free blood pressure check and blood sugar screenings.

Following the yard sales and outdoor activities, Askewville Bethel Assembly of God and Askewville Baptist Church combined to provide a southern gospel sing.

“I think we lost some folks when they left after the yard sales,” Pierce said. “Some didn’t make it back, but overall we had a good turnout.”

The mayor said he had already received many comments from those who enjoyed the day and said they were hoping it would become an annual event. He said the town board would discuss the possibility at its next meeting.

“I was pleased with it for our first time,” Pierce said. “Overall, I think all in town enjoyed it.”
