Northeastern stops HCHS

AHOSKIE – A five-run second inning lifted Northeastern High School over Hertford County High here Tuesday night.

The Eagles went on from that second inning break-out to top the Bears 11-3 in a Northeastern Coastal Conference baseball game.

Northeastern opened the scoring with a single run in the top of the first frame, but HCHS responded in the home half of the same inning.

Richard Burns tripled to right for the Bears and then scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-all.

The Eagles scored five runs in the top of the second to take a 6-1 lead and never looked back.

Northeastern added a pair of runs in the top of the third to take an 8-1 margin.

The Bears threatened in the bottom of the third frame.

With one out, Grayson Toms singled to center and then Travis Ellis had a base hit to right. Burns was hit by a pitch to load the bases, but a strike out and a groundout ended the inning with the Eagles still ahead by seven.

Hertford County scored its final two runs in the bottom of the fourth frame.

Brandon Warren walked and went to third on an error. Mitchell Godwin then reached first on an error, but was thrown out at second on the play. Warren scored on a wild pitch.

Tyler Pryor walked, but was erased at second when Monterio Hunter reached on a fielder’s choice. Hunter stole second and then scored on a Toms’ RBI-single to left to trim the deficit to 8-3.

Northeastern added three more marks in the top of the fifth inning to establish the final.

Ellis pitched four and one-third innings for the loss. Pryor tossed the final two and two-thirds of an inning.

The Bears had six hits led by Ellis, who was 3-for-4. Toms had two hits and Burns added one hit.

Hertford County dropped to 9-8 overall and 4-4 in league play. They will host Edenton in another conference contest at 7 p.m. Friday.
