RICH SQUARE — Police here are asking citizens to be vigilant as they search for suspect who is being described as a “peeping Tom.”

According to Rich Square Police Lt. Kevin Byrd, there have been approximately 10 reported incidents involving the voyeur in the last three to four months.

Byrd said the offender has been positioning lawn furniture and ladders under the bathroom and bedroom windows of homes to spy on women.

Most of the incidents have occurred in the Drew Avenue and Roberts Road areas in Rich Square, though a couple of them have happened a quarter of a mile from that area.

Byrd said the voyeur seems to be targeting black females who are alone in their homes.

In the last reported case, Byrd said, the woman’s husband had just left when she saw a doorknob to her home turning as if someone was checking to see if it was locked, which it was.

“We’re not trying to panic anyone; we’re chasing down some leads,” he said.

In the meantime, Byrd urged citizens to be aware of their surroundings.

“We want everyone to be cautious,” he said.

He added police patrols have been stepped up in the area and no incidents have been reported in the last few weeks.
