AHOSKIE – Charges are pending in a fatal accident that claimed the life of a Conway woman Tuesday afternoon.

Thelma Vaughan, 61, died as a result of the two-vehicle mishap that occurred at 3:20 p.m. at the intersection of NC 11 and NC 561 west of Ahoskie.

According to a report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper J.C. Copeland, Vaughan was operating a 2002 Buick passenger car traveling west on NC 561. As her vehicle was passing through the intersection, it was struck by a 2000 Ford van operated by Toby Thompson, 32, of Williamston. Thompson’s vehicle was traveling north on NC 11 at the time of the accident.

Copeland’s report noted that Thompson’s vehicle failed to stop at the traffic signal at the NC 11/NC 561 intersection and impacted Vaughan’s vehicle on the driver’s side.

Vaughan was transported to Roanoke-Chowan Hospital where she was pronounced dead.

The Highway Patrol report showed that Thompson as well as three passengers in her vehicle were all injured. None were believed to be life-threatening.

The fatality was the eighth of the year within the Highway Patrol’s Troop A District II area (Bertie, Gates and Hertford counties). Five of those fatalities have occurred in Hertford County.
