WINDSOR – Tragedy struck a Bertie County family Friday.

Henry Gillam Spruill, 7, died in a four-wheeler accident.

“He was riding a four-wheeler on the farm and was in an accident,” Bertie County Sheriff Greg Atkins said. “It’s horrible. It’s just a tragic situation.”

Spruill was a student at Lawrence Academy and was active in sports, both in the Cashie Youth League and the Bertie County Recreation Department. He was a shortstop for the Bill Clough Ford baseball team and a halfback for the Bertie Bashers’ football team.

A memorial fund for Spruill has been set up at Lawrence Academy. Those wishing to contribute may do so at P.O. Box 70, Merry Hill, NC 27957. Memorial gifts may also be made to St. Thomas Episcopal Church, P.O. Box 400, Windsor, NC 27983.
