A lot of bark, but not a lot of bite.

That basically sums-up Monday’s series of thunderstorms that roared through the Roanoke-Chowan area during the late morning and early afternoon hours.

Several storm cells, out in advance of a cold front, were accompanied by strong winds, heavy downpours, sharp lightning and dime-size hail.

The entire Roanoke-Chowan area was under a tornado warning as National Weather Service Doppler radar detected rotation within several of the storm cells. However, there were no confirmed sightings of funnel clouds in the area.

As the storm cells raced northward, the Sunbury area of Gates County did fall under attack from the weather. There, the rough weather forced students at T.S. Cooper Elementary School to hunker down in the hallways for a brief time as the weather system blew past.

The storms ushered in much cooler weather. Temperatures fell overnight Monday and Tuesday is predicted as sunny and cool. Tuesday night temps are predicted in the mid-30’s.
