AHOSKIE – Freshman Caroline White tossed a two-hitter here Friday as the Lady Falcons continued to cruise.

The Bertie High School softball team won their third Northeastern Coastal Conference game of the week – defeating Hertford County High School 10-1 – to improve to 7-1 overall and 5-0 in the league.

White tossed seven complete innings, allowing just one run on two hits and striking out 18 in the victory.

The Lady Falcons got on the board first, scoring five runs in the top of the first frame.

Jody Mizelle reached on an error for the Lady Falcons and then scored on an error. Courtney Dunlow scored on a White groundout. Chelsea Dunlow scored on an error. Sandi Todd scored on a wild pitch and Andrea Dunlow delivered an RBI-single to give Bertie a 5-0 lead.

The Lady Falcons added another run in the top of the third when Todd scored on an error.

Bertie got another run in the top of the fourth when Courtney Dunlow scored on a wild pitch to give the Lady Falcons a 7-0 advantage.

The Lady Bears got their only run of the game in the bottom of the fourth frame. Amber Moore walked, went to second on a wild pitch and went to third on a Jaleesa Chinn groundout. Moore scored on a wild pitch to close the gap to 7-1.

Bertie’s final three runs came in the visitor’s half of the sixth inning. Todd and Kaitlyn Dunlow had RBI-singles and Mizelle added an RBI-groundout to make it 10-1.

“Caroline did a great job on the mound,” said veteran BHS coach Jackie Copeland. “Our bottom of the lineup all did an excellent job. We played good defense.”

As for the Falcons’ current place atop the league standings, Copeland was careful to insist they weren’t thinking ahead.

“We’re taking out games one at a time,” she insisted. “This was a good win, now we look to the next one.”

Hertford County’s Amber Matthews tossed all seven innings, scattering just five hits and striking out three.

“We made early mistakes that cost us,” said HCHS assistant coach Darryl McCalop. “We are improving. We just have to show up and play every day.”

The Lady Bears are 2-7 overall and 1-3 in the league. They will travel to Currituck Tuesday. The Lady Falcons will travel to meet the same Lady Knight team on Wednesday.
