POWELLSVILLE – A Bertie County volunteer fireman was seriously injured near here Monday morning while responding to an accident scene on Cremo Road (RP 1313).

According to a report filed by North Carolina Highway Patrol Trooper J.V. Reid, Timothy King suffered severe trauma to his legs after he was briefly pinned at the back of his SUV by a vehicle that had lost control on an icy stretch of road.

King, a volunteer with the Trap Fire Department, was on the scene of an earlier accident involving a vehicle that had apparently lost control on the same icy spot in the road.

“Mr. King was standing at the rear of his vehicle where he was retrieving his gear to work the first accident scene when another vehicle rounded the curve and hit the same patch of black ice and lost control,” Trooper Reid said. “That vehicle rear-ended Mr. King’s vehicle, briefly pinning him between the two, before his vehicle was moved to the other side of the roadway due to the impact.”

Reid identified Nina Northcott of Colerain as the driver of the vehicle that made impact with King’s SUV. He added that she was not injured.

The Trooper added that King was transported to Roanoke-Chowan Hospital and later airlifted to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville where he is listed in stable condition.

The driver of the first vehicle to lose control on the icy road was Sharone Chamblee of Colerain. Her Chrysler passenger car slipped off the road after hitting the icy spot and overturned. Reid said Chamblee was injured and was transported to R-CH.

Both accidents occurred on the Meadow Road end of Cremo Road near the Trap community.

Reid said charges were pending in the accident which injured King. That mishap was reported at 8:22 a.m.

In a related matter, due to the severity of King’s injuries, Bertie County Emergency Management Director Rickey Freeman said that a debriefing session was held last night (Monday) at the Trap Volunteer Fire Department for firemen and EMS personnel involved in responding to the accident.
