AHOSKIE – Bertie High School’s varsity girls reached a pair of milestones here Friday night.

The Lady Falcons garnered victory number 20 for the season and in the process completed the Northeastern Coastal Conference schedule unbeaten as they topped Hertford County High School 65-28.

Ayanna Wilson led three players in double figures with 19 points for Bertie. Tierra Brown and Devonna Bond added 15 each. In addition, Equalia Vines scored six points and was recognized for career point number 1,050 during the contest.

“I’m proud of the girls. They did an excellent job on executing the plays and playing defense,” said veteran Bertie High School basketball boss Alice Lyons. “As for the conference wins, we’re proud of the 12-0 conference run and excited about the conference tournament and the playoffs.

Despite the Falcons jumping out to a 5-0 lead on a three-pointer by Bond and a hoop by Brown, Hertford County battled back. Deondra Morrison had a pair of free throws and Danielle Futrell scored from the floor to cut the lead to 5-4.

Bond had back-to-back scores – a triple and a deuce – to push it to 10-4, but Shaniece Futrell answered with a triple for Hertford County to close it to 10-7.

The Lady Falcons closed out the first quarter on a 5-0 run when Brown scored from the floor and Wilson buried a three-pointer to make it 15-7.

Briante Bond scored for the Lady Bears to open the second quarter, but Wilson answered and then Monica Outlaw scored from behind the arc to make it 20-9.

After a free throw from Raqueta Moore, the Falcons again had a 5-0 spurt, this time with Wilson scoring all the points as she helped Bertie push out to a 28-10 advantage.

Danielle Futrell briefly interrupted the spurt, but Bertie got a Montresha Perry hoop to keep their advantage. After a Shaniece Futrell free throw, the Lady Falcons closed the first half on a 6-0 spurt that gave them a 36-13 advantage at the intermission.

The Falcons opened the second half on a 16-3 spurt with Hertford County’s only score coming on a three-pointer from Bond early in the period. The Falcons got hoops on the run from Eboni Bond, Devonna Bond, Vines, Brown and Wilson. At the end of the spurt, the lead stood at 52-16.

Jaleesa Chinn finally stopped the spurt with a hoop late in the quarter, but the Falcons closed out the period with a Vines hoop, a Brown triple and a Perry free throw to lead 58-18 heading into the final period of play.

HCHS had the first two buckets of the fourth quarter when Shaniece Futrell and Danielle Futrell had back-to-back buckets to close within 58-22.

The teams played pretty evenly throughout the remainder of the game with the Falcons claiming a 65-28 victory.

In addition to the double figure scoring, the Falcons got three from Perry and Outlaw and two each from Bond and Mia Harrell.

The Lady Bears were paced by Bond’s nine points and six each from the two Futrells. Camryn Jones, Chinn and Morrison had two points each.

The Lady Falcons finished the regular season 20-1 overall and 12-0 in the league while HCHS wrapped up the 2008-09 campaign 7-14 and 4-8.

The Lady Bears will be in action tonight when they travel to First Flight tonight (Tuesday) for a 6 p.m. contest. Bertie will await the winner of that game for a semifinal contest at Hertford County High School Wednesday night.
