LASKER – Senior Night was a huge success for the Lady Eagles.

Northeast Academy broke open a close game in the early moments of the second quarter and rolled to a 52-30 victory over visiting Albemarle School in the final home game of the regular season for the seniors.

“My seniors really gave good team play tonight and are looking forward to a big game coming up at Hobgood,” said Northeast Academy Head Coach Joella Brown.

It was senior Betty Edwards who led the way for the Eagles as she scored 13 points to lead the offensive attack. Molly Hargrave added nine for the Lady Eagles while Lacy Pfeifer and LeAnn Barnes scored eight each. Callie Burgess and Taylor Cocke added six each.

The contest was deadlocked at 9-all heading into the second period, but Northeast jumped out to a quick start in that quarter, scoring the first 13 points of the period to take a commanding lead.

Edwards started the onslaught with a three-pointer and was followed by hoops from Hargrave and Barnes as they took a 16-9 lead. Hargrave then added a three-point play that was followed by an Edwards free throw and a Pfeiffer hoop that gave Northeast a 22-9 lead.

Albemarle got a hoop from Shelby Erps and a free throw from Laurie Courtright to get back within 10 (22-12), but the Lady Eagles got consecutive hoops from Cocke as they went back up 26-12 with 2:31 to play in the second period.

Following a Joanna Howington bucket for the Lady Colts, Northeast scored the final 10 points of the first half. Edwards hit a pair of three-pointers while Pfeiffer added a hoop and Barnes swished two free throws to give the Lady Eagles a 36-14 lead at the intermission.

The Lady Colts started strong in the third quarter with a hoop from Erps and a triple by Jenny Phillips answered only by a Hargrave bucket as they closed within 38-19.

Northeast, however, answered with a hoop by Pfeiffer and a bucket by Hargrave to lead 42-19. They led 44-22 after three quarters.

The two teams scored eight points each in the fourth quarter as the Lady Eagles held on for a 52-30 Tarheel Independent Conference victory.

Early in the contest, the two teams had also battled to a tie through one period of play. Albemarle led 2-0 early, but Northeast rallied and took the lead 7-4 late in the quarter on a three-pointer by Edwards.

After the Colts tied the game on a Howington bucket, Erps pushed them ahead 9-7 with 45 ticks left on the first quarter clock. Burgess tied the contest with 19 seconds to play in the first quarter.
