CREEKSVILLE – Northampton-West only had five players score.

Unfortunately for the Rams of Northampton-East, all of those were in double figures as the Hurricanes came out on top of a 59-46 boy’s basketball game here Tuesday night.

Despite the fact Northampton-East scored first (on a basket by Charles Cumbo), the Hurricanes wasted little time taking control of the basketball game.

Ramel Belfield, who led the Hurricanes with 17 points, hit a three-pointer to start a 9-0 run for West. He was followed by a hoop from David Miles and then the two hit back-to-back shots again.

Corey Neal finally stopped the spurt with a hoop for East, but Antonio Manley converted a three-point play moments later to push the West advantage to 12-4. They went on to a 16-8 lead at the end of the first quarter.

East rallied by scoring five of the first eight points in the second period. Cumbo had all five points – two hoops and a free throw – and led the Rams to within six (19-13).

West, however continued to pull away thanks to shots from the charity stripe where they hit 4-of-5 shots to go ahead 25-15.

Darrell Fisher and Rudolph Bishop hit back-to-back shots for the Rams to close back to a six-point deficit (25-19).

The Hurricanes, however, again pulled away at the free throw line, scoring five times from the charity stripe and adding a hoop to go ahead 32-19. The Rams closed the gap to 36-24 at the half, but never got closer.

West outscored the home team 13-7 in the third quarter to push their lead to 49-31 by the end of the period and coasted to the league win.

Three Rams had nine points in the contest. They were Fisher, Cumbo and Quayshawn Deloatch. Bishop and Ricky Dickens added six each while Jerry Futrell had five.

Belfield led five Hurricanes in double figures with 17 points while Manley and Marvin Rawles had 11 each. Miles and Troy Golden added 10 points each.

The Rams will host Gates County High School Friday night in another Tar-Roanoke Conference battle.
