POWELLSVILLE – One woman remains hospitalized following a two-vehicle accident on US 13 near here last week.

According to the North Carolina State Highway Patrol, Patricia Ruth Frederick of Suffolk, Va. apparently blacked out while operating a 2002 Pontiac passenger car traveling south on US 13 near Powellsville at 8:45 a.m. on Friday.

Frederick’s vehicle crossed the center line where it struck, head-on, a 2004 Chevrolet passenger car operated by Modestine Bernice Drake of Ahoskie. Drake’s vehicle was traveling north on US 13 at the time of the crash.

Following the impact, Frederick’s vehicle came to rest in the center of US 13 while Drake’s car left the roadway and came to a stop in the northbound ditch.

Both women were airlifted by EastCare to Pitt County Memorial Hospital in Greenville. There, Frederick remains while Drake was reportedly treated and released.

Michael Drake, a front seat passenger in the Drake vehicle, was taken by rescue squad to Roanoke-Chowan Hospital where he was reportedly treated and released.

Trooper J.G. Williams investigated the accident. He said it was unclear at this time what caused Frederick to black out.

Charges are pending.
