Ridgecroft girls, Northeast boys win

AHOSKIE – Ridgecroft School junior varsity girls and boys basketball teams split their first day double-headers in the Lt. Nick Brantley Scholarship Tournament.

In the girls jayvee game, Ridgecroft took a 32-27 win.

Miller Bryant and Lauren Colson were leading scorers for the Lady Rams with 12 and 10 points, respectively. Ashton Liverman led Northeast with 11 points while Ivy Little added 10.

The two teams played evenly through the first quarter which ended with Northeast ahead by a single point, 7-6.

Ridgecroft began to find their offensive balance more in the second quarter and took a two-point lead at halftime, 13-11.

Another evenly balanced third quarter followed and NEA was able to only trail by a point entering the fourth quarter, 20-19, Ridgecroft.

The Lady Eagles were forced to foul in their comeback and the Lady Rams kept their patience and held off the Lady Eagles for the win.

In the boy’s jayvee game, Northeast rolled to a 36-23 win. Clay Robbins was leading scorer for NEA with 13 points while Brad Johnson added 12. Bobby Edwards led Ridgecroft with 14.

Northeast established itself early, racing out to a 10-4 first quarter lead.

They added 10 more in the second quarter to take a 20-10 halftime lead. Ridgecroft inched back in the third quarter and only trailed by four, 25-21, with six minutes left to play.

But the young Rams could only muster two points the rest of the way and NEA cruised into Tuesday’s game with a 13-point victory.
