WINTON — One change at the board’s table; no change in the chairman’s chair…that, in a nutshell, was the highlight of Monday’s meeting of the Hertford County Board of Commissioners. Newly elected Commissioner William F. “Bill” Mitchell took the oath of office and was sworn in for his first term on the Board. Meanwhile, two recently re-elected commissioners, DuPont L. Davis and Howard Hunter III, and the county’s register of deeds, Kathleen W. Wright, reaffirmed their oaths. Superior Court Judge Cy Grant administered these proceedings. After those oaths were administered, the board, as is tradition, elected their leadership for the upcoming year. Commissioner Curtis Freeman nominated Commissioner Johnnie Farmer for the position of chairman, but rescinded his nomination after Farmer pointed out Hunter’s outstanding performance as chair during the last term and nominated him. Davis nominated Farmer for the position of vice-chairman and Freeman seconded the motion. By unanimous agreements of the Board, Hunter and Farmer were appointed to these positions of leadership. In other business, booklets containing the specifications for the upcoming 2011 revaluation of property for tax assessment were passed out to the commissioners by County Tax Assessor Sylvia F. Anderson. County Manager Loria D. Williams recommended that the Board award a financing contract, for the purchase of 10 new county vehicles, to BB&T Government Finance. After explaining that 10 vehicles is a rather large purchase for the county and needed to be financed over four years instead of the usual three, Williams pointed out that BB&T Government Finance offered the best interest rates for the county’s plan. The board was unanimous in supporting her recommendation.
