(Editor’s Note: The following story corrects some information that was not accurate in the account from Monday’s meeting of the Hertford County Commissioners that was published in Tuesday’s edition.)

WINTON — William “Bill” Mitchell took his seat as a member of the Hertford County Commissioners Monday morning. Mitchell, who was elected during the November voting, was sworn in for his first term as the representative of the Winton district on the local governing body. Flanked by his family, Mitchell swore to uphold the duties of the office and the constitution of the United States. “I am thankful for the opportunity to serve and I want to work hard for the people of Hertford County,” Mitchell said during a telephone interview Tuesday morning. “I want to see the community come to the commissioners and let us know what they want to see. We want to know the interests of the community. “I believe in working hard,” he continued. “There are a lot of hard-working people in the county and I want to represent them by doing the same.” Two incumbent board members – Howard J. Hunter III and DuPont L. Davis – also took the oath of office after being reelected in November. Following the oaths being administered, Clerk to the Board Patricia Weaver called for nominations for the position of chairman. Davis nominated Hunter to continue in that role and Commissioner Curtis A. Freeman nominated Commissioner Johnnie R. Farmer. Farmer said he appreciated the confidence, but felt Hunter had done a good job and should remain in the role. “I had assumed Howard would continue to serve,” Farmer said by telephone Tuesday. “I hadn’t even given any thought to anyone else being chairman. I felt he had done an excellent job and that’s why I asked Curtis to withdraw my nomination and he graciously agreed.” Following Farmer’s name being withdrawn, nominations were closed for the post of chairman and opened for vice chairman. Davis nominated Farmer for that post with Freeman offering a second. No other names were submitted. On a unanimous vote of the board, Hunter was reelected chairman and Farmer was selected as vice chairman. “I appreciate the support shown to me by my fellow board members in allowing me to continue to serve as chairman,” Hunter said. “I look forward to continuing to work together to serve the best interest of the citizens of Hertford County.” Farmer said he was glad to do whatever he could to assist the county. “I appreciate being chosen as vice chairman,” Farmer said. “I’m glad to do whatever I can to help.”
