Starkey Jernigan

Starkey Payton Jernigan, 93, of New Road, Colerain, died Friday, November 14, 2008 at Chowan Hospital, Edenton.
A native of Bertie County, Jernigan was a member of Elm Grove Baptist Church where he served as a Deacon, Sunday School Superintendent and a Sunday School teacher.
He was an Army veteran of World War II, seeing action at the Battle of the Bulge.
Survivors include his wife, Mattie J. Jernigan of Colerain; daughters, Louise Jernigan of Colerain and Linda Eileen Elks of Grimesland; sons, Ronald Jernigan and Paul Jernigan, both of Colerain; sisters Paline Robertson of Woodand, Nettie White of Windsor, Annie Mae Hill of Colerain, Ruby White of Windsor, Edna Jernigan of Colerain and Virgie Mizelle of Windsor; seven grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Rev. Preston Jernigan conducted the funeral service on Monday, Nov. 17 at Elm Grove Baptist Church. Burial followed in the Mizelle Family Cemetery on New Road.
The family will receive friends at the home.
