MURFREESBORO—A handmade, colorful, collage of fabric will stand as a testament to those who have served our country thanks to one talented citizen here.

Recently, Julie Wu Lambert of Murfreesboro presented the Murfreesboro Town Council with a quilt patterned like an American flag to be displayed at the Town Hall.

“Thank you for all the hard work,” said Mayor Lynn Johnson, as she and council members accepted a plaque dedicating the quilt.

Lambert said she made the quilt simply to honor area citizens who have served in the U.S. military.

“Last year they built a monument for the town to have something for the war veterans,” she said. “Now when people stop by to see the monument they can come in and see the quilt.”

Lambert said the quilt is a design of her own, one she created in 2005. The pattern itself went on to win a blue ribbon.

Lambert has also donated three other quilts around town, including two to the Elizabeth Sewell Library and one to the Murfreesboro Women’s Club.

Along with the donation of the quilt, which took a year for Lambert to construct, she also donated a cross stitched plaque dedicating the work to veterans.

“American Flag handmade by Julie Wu Lambert,” the plaque states. “Especially for (the) Town of Murfreesboro in remembrance of area war veterans (that) served in the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marine Corps and Coast Guard.”

The dedication of the quilt strikes a personal note for Lambert, whose late husband, Michael, served in the Air Force.

But, Lambert said, she made the quilt for all veterans.

“I just want to dedicate it to all the veterans in the area,” she said.

The quilt is on display in the foyer of the Town Hall.
