Lady Eagles sweep pair

LASKER – Northeast Academy used a marathon win in game one to propel themselves to victory Tuesday.

The Lady Eagles defeated Terra Ceia Christian School 29-27 in the first game and went on to a four-set volleyball win over their Tarheel Independent Conference rivals.

“In game one, Molly Hargrave served seven straight points to overcome a 24-18 deficit,” said Northeast Head Coach Cap Pfeiffer. “She served us through 25 and then Jennifer Sykes finished it with points 28 and 29.”

The Lady Eagles dropped the second set 25-20, but rallied to win games three (25-22) and four (27-25).

“The cardiac kids pull it off in our tight games,” Pfeifer said.

Jennifer Sykes had eight assists, four blocks, two kills, two digs and one tip for Northeast while Kelly Sykes added six kills, three aces, one dig and one assist.

Lacy Pfeiffer checked in with four aces, four digs and two kills for the Lady Eagles while Callie Burgess added two digs, one kill, one block and one assist. Lauren Edwards contributed one ace, one block and a dig while Hargrave had one dig.

The victory over Terra Ceia came one day after defeating Ahoskie Christian School in a non-conference outing. In that matchup, the Lady Eagles took a straight-set victory by counts of 25-12, 25-7 and 25-15.

In the match, Kelly Sykes paced Northeast with nine assists, five aces, four kills and one tip while Jennifer Sykes had four aces, three tips, three kills and one assist.

Lacy Pfeiffer added six assists, three aces and one kill for Northeast while Callie Burgess had five kills, one tip and one assist.

Rounding out the offense were Lauren Edwards (one assist, one tip), Meghan Bridgers (one kill, one tip), Cameron Flythe (one kill) and Jessica Ellis (three assists, one tip).

After the two varsity wins, the Lady Eagles are 11-9 in 2008. They stand 4-7 inside the TIC.

Northeast also secured wins in both junior varsity contests. They defeated Terra Ceia 25-11 and 25-10.

“This team has really made progress this year,” Cap Pfeiffer said. “They are working hard.”

Lindsey Bryant led Northeast with five aces, four tips, two assists and two kills while Sarah Best had one ace and one kill. Also providing offense were Brittney Bolton (two aces), Dayna Barnes (two kills) and Ashlee Flythe (one assist).

Northeast also beat Ahoskie Christian, winning by counts of 25-9 and 25-15.

Lindsey Bryant had four aces and two tips while Ashlee Flythe had three aces and one tip. Brittney Bolton added three aces while Sarah Best, Taylor King and Dayna Barnes had one ace each.

The Northeast jayvees are now 11-8 overall and 5-6 in the TIC.
