MURFREESBORO – Livingstone College is bringing a three-game win streak to Murfreesboro tonight (Saturday).

The Blue Bears have won their past two football games on the field after claiming victory by forfeit over Bowie State University. Bowie State won the game 15-10 on the field, but later forfeited the victory

The three wins in a row are a revival for the Blue Bears who had suffered through 19 consecutive losses before breaking into the win column. They are also the first victories for second-year Head Coach Lamonte Massie.

They will be trying to extend their win streak during Chowan University’s Homecoming here and the Hawks are enjoying a little revival of their own. Already having won their first game of the season, the Hawks have battled in their last two outings against strong members of the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association.

After struggling out of the gate (only three points in two games) the Hawks have found their offensive stride, scoring at least 20 points in each of their last four games, including a 23-20 win over Brevard College.

Chowan will be looking for their first win as member of the CIAA after dropping league games to Elizabeth City State University, Fayetteville State University and Virginia Union University. Livingstone claimed their first CIAA win on the field last week by beating Johnson C. Smith, 32-26.

The Hawks head into the game with quarterback C.J. Westler, a former CIAA Offensive Back of the Week, leading the way on offense. Westler has thrown for 11 touchdowns this season. He has completed 97 of 227 attempts and thrown for 1,172 yards in his first season leading the Hawks.

Westler has a 91.5 quarterback efficiency rating and is averaging slightly more than 195 yards per game.

The quarterback’s top targets have been Eddie Coard and James Fox, both of whom have gone over 300 yards receiving. Coard has 31 catches this season for 368 yards and two scores while Fox has made 25 grabs for 294 yards and six touchdowns.

J.J. Spates, a running back, has made 10 catches this season for 87 yards and sits third on the team in receiving. He is also one of the leading rushers for Chowan, having rumbled for 170 yards this season on 53 attempts.

Tied with Spates atop the rushing category is Brandon Myrick, who also has 170 yards. He has reached that total on 41 carries and has one touchdown on the ground.

On special teams, the Hawks are led by D’Angelo Goffingon who has returned seven punts for 42 yards with a long of 24 and has run back 22 kickoffs and tallied 487 yards with a long of 63 yards. He also has a team-high two interceptions which have been returned for 34 yards.

Defensively, the Hawks are led by Jomo Brown. The senior linebacker has recorded 43 tackles this season, 22 of which have been solo. Brown has two tackles for loss, an interception, one pass defended and one fumble recovery.

Jeremy Bednarz-Gray has also been stellar for the Hawks, having recorded 38 tackles from his linebacker spot. Bednarz-Gray has made 20 of those tackles on his own and three of them have been for loss. He also has half of a sack, two pass breaks ups, two passes defended and two fumble recoveries.

Following those two are Phil Koch (36 tackles), Greg Palmer (28 tackles), Brendon Scott (24 tackles), Marcus Johnson (24 tackles) and Quinten Ladson (21 tackles).

The Blue Bears are being led offensively by senior running back Rashaad Flucker. He has posted two consecutive 100-yard performances in Livingstone’s victories over Lincoln College and Johnson C. Smith.

For the season, Flucker has gained 328 yards and scored two touchdowns. His backup, Gregory James has rushed for 110 yards this season on 18 carries.

Flucker has the highest number of receptions for the Blue Bears, having pulled down 21 catches during the ’08 campaign.

The Blue Bears have indicated junior quarterback Bryan Aycoth will start tonight in Murfreesboro. He and classmate Steven Williams have each played in all games for the Bears.

Aycoth is 37-of-86 for the season for 351 yards and no touchdowns while Williams is 45-of-97 for 561 yards and six touchdowns.

Yardage wise, the Blue Bears are led in receiving by Christopher Peo with 265 yards on 13 catches while Travis Allen has 211 yards on 15 grabs.

Defensively, Livingstone is led by Robert Massey. The freshman linebacker has recorded 45 tackles, 23 of which have been solo. He also has three tackles for loss, one pass breakup and one pass defended. Massey has also one fumble recovery.

Anthony Earles (42 tackles), Alkeem Deloach (32 tackles), Coleman Goff (31 tackles) and Stanford Dorsey (27 tackles) also have been leaders for Livingstone.

The Hawks and Blue Bears will do battle at 6 p.m. tonight with a win in the Western Division of the CIAA on the line.
