BARCO – Despite limited offense, Hertford County High School won their second Northeastern Coastal Conference game in a row here last night (Friday).

The Bears ran 10 offensive plays in the first half and had just 242 yards of total offense, but it was more than enough to roll by Currituck County High School 41-6.

The Knights opened the scoring after HCHS fumbled on their first possession. Noah Manuel capped a 31-yard drive with a two-yard plunge to give Currituck a 6-0 lead.

On the ensuing kickoff, Larry Raynor returned the pigskin 83 yards for a touchdown. Richard Burns added the PAT and HCHS led 7-6.

Later in the first half, Ronald Gatling blocked a punt. That set up a 35-yard jaunt to paydirt by Antonio Vaughan which, coupled with Burns’ kick, gave Hertford County a 14-6 lead.

Currituck’s next mistake on special teams led to another HCHS score. This time a bad snap gave the Bears possession of the football on the Currituck 18-yardline. Gatling capped the drive with a four-yard score and Hertford County led 20-6.

With just eight seconds left in the first half, Vaughan picked off a Currituck pass and returned the interception 93 yards for a score. Burns added the PAT and HCHS led 27-6 at the half.

Hertford County put together an 80-yard, 17-play drive to open the third quarter that took 8:43 off the clock. Shea Tann punched it in on a one-yard run and Burns added the conversion for a 34-6 lead.

Markee White scored for the Bears with 1:04 to play in the third and that, coupled with the Burns kick, made it 41-6 and established the final for the night. White led the Bears offensively with 90 yards on nine carries.

Hertford County (6-2, 2-1) will host Pasquotank County High School next Friday in another Northeastern Coastal Conference matchup.
