Saturday is a busy day at Chowan University.

Those looking for a day of family fun should make plans to spend their afternoon and evening in Murfreesboro, enjoying a beautiful day for athletic events at the school.

The afternoon is slated to start at 2 p.m. when the Chowan womens soccer team will host Lenoir-Rhyne College. The Lady Hawks are a fun team to watch with scoring threats scattered over the field.

The Hawks are led by junior Ashley Bradford who has seven goals so far this season. She has 14 points for the season and has taken 21 shots. Classmate Clara Danzeisen has one goal this season and has added three assists for five total points. That number is the same as Meredith McCarthy who has two goals and one assist.

Katie Perkins is next with four points. She has one goal and two assists. Katie Duncan and Katelyn Mahoney have also scored for Chowan this season.

Defensively, Kristy Brown has been solid in goal with a .863 save percentage. She has three shutouts this year.

Two hours later, the mens soccer team from Chowan will follow as they also host Lenoir-Rhyne College.

The Hawks have struggled this season, but they are still working to improve as the season goes along.

Chowan has been led thus far by Travis Albea and Zach Rahama each of whom has earned two points this season. Both have scored one goal in 2008.

Isidro Lopez and Parris Pierce have added the assists this year.

Josh Cenci has played all eight games in goal for the Hawks and has recorded 59 saves.

If those two outings arent enough, the Hawks will also be on the football field Saturday. Not only will that game be the home-opener in the Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association (CIAA), but will be the first game played under the new lights at James G. Garrison Stadium.

The contest is a tough one for the Hawks as visiting Virginia Union is one of the top teams in the league and Lamar Little is generally recognized as the top quarterback in the league.

I like what is happening with Chowan Head Football Coach Tim Places squad. They seem to be a team that will fight you for every inch. The comments from Virginia Military Institute Coach Sparky Woods last week told a lot about the Hawks.

Woods said he was impressed by Chowans fight and the fact that they scored late in the fourth quarter when many teams would have already quit.

I think the Hawks have a lot of fight in them too and Im pleased with the way Place and his staff are running the program. They are not overwhelmed by the task at hand and that is important.

While Saturdays contest will be tough for the Hawks, it will be much easier if the fans of Chowan pack the stadium and give a true home-field advantage.

Saturday will be a great day at Chowan and I hope to see you there.
