OAK RIDGE – Lawrence Academy matched its win total for 2007 in week number three.

The Warriors rolled to a 44-0 win over Oak Ridge Military Academy Monday afternoon in a prep football contest postponed because of Tropical Storm Hanna.

The Warriors finished 2-8 a season ago, but are 2-1 after just three weeks of the 2008 season. Second-year Head Football Coach Mike Dail said he was pleased with the current status of his team.

“Of course it feels good,” he said. “When you can win as many as last year with seven games left, you are certainly hoping to surpass last year’s record. We’re trying to get better every day and every game.”

The Warriors recovered an Oak Ridge fumble on the opening kickoff and took just two plays to score. Shane Stevens went in from eight yards out to record the touchdown. The kick failed, leaving Lawrence ahead 6-0.

That score stood until the second quarter when Lawrence quarterback Blake Hill connected with Shane Leggett on a 10-yard pass. The run failed leaving Lawrence with a 12-0 advantage.

Hill added a score on the ground later in the second quarter when he went in from one yard out. The pass failed and Lawrence had an 18-0 lead headed into the intermission.

The Warriors wasted no time scoring in the second half when Keith Thompson returned the opening kickoff 75 yards for a touchdown. The run failed and Lawrence grabbed a 24-0 lead.

Hill scored again from 46 yards out in the third quarter and then he threw a 25-yard scoring pass to Leggett. Luke Leary ran in the conversion on the second score, giving Lawrence a 38-0 lead.

Thompson scored in the fourth quarter on a Stevens five-yard run to establish the final score.

“I thought the offense played extremely well,” Dail said. “I was really, really pleased with some players on defense including Will Norrell on the defensive line and Shane Stevens at linebacker.

“Obviously you can look at the stat line and see that Shane Leggett, Blake Hill and Keith Thompson played well on offense,” he said.

The Warriors rolled up 357 yards of total offense, 279 of which came on the ground. Thompson led the offensive attack with 104 yards on 11 carries while Leggett led all receivers with 70 yards on four catches, including two touchdowns.

Hill was 4-of-7 passing for 55 yards.

Dail said while he was pleased, he wanted the team to continue to improve.

“We need to improve in every facet of the game,” Dail said. “We’ve just got to block better. We’re still young and they’re learning every day.”

The Warriors will return home Friday when they host Trinity at 7:30 p.m.
