Thank you Mr. James Broglin for the letter, “Gone, Not Forgotten,” in the Aug. 30 Roanoke-Chowan News-Herald.

What you wrote in the News-Herald was a blessing for all volunteers of rescue squads and individuals all over the state of North Carolina, mainly those in Hertford County.

As a past director of the North Carolina Rescue and EMS Association, I traveled from Manteo to Murphy; from Wilmington to West Jefferson at different times over 30 years to attend meetings with over 100 rescue squads. During that time I never heard a statement saying that county officials didn’t want to be bothered by volunteer organizations, as quoted by Kevin Davidson in Mr. Broglin’s letter.

For 42 and one-half years with the same company, if I was given a job, I was expected to do it.

Volunteers will be needed until we are both gone because they, most of the time, are the first ones on the scene.

So, Mr. Davidson, if you have an accident and need help and a volunteer walks up, are you going to say, “I don’t need your help?”
