Ruth Maddrey

Ruth Martin Maddrey, age 87, retired teacher’s aide, of North Main Street, Mooresville, died Monday, Aug. 25, 2008 at her home.

She was born in Northampton County on Nov. 30, 1920, a daughter of the late George N. and Maggie Sue Baugham Martin.

Her husband, Roland Waudell Maddrey, died Nov. 9, 1994.

Survivors include sons, Roland Maddrey Jr. and wife Katrina, of Mooresville and Bill Maddrey and wife, Tricia, of Charlotte; daughters, Peggy Kale and husband, Sid, of Myrtle Beach, S.C., Betty Swanson and husband, Bob, of Cumming, Ga., Carol McKinney and husband, Mike, of Greensboro and Joy Miller and husband, Chuck, of Morrisville; sister, Iris Darden of Franklin Va.; grandchildren, Mark and Scott Kale, Joy Fullilove, Susan Neuville, Julie Swanson, Kathryn, John and James Maddrey, Gray and Vaughn Maddrey and Blake and Kyle McKinney. She also has six great-grandchildren.

A memorial service was held at 11 a.m. Friday, Aug. 29, at First Baptist Church with Rev. Mark Pitts in charge.

Memorials may be made to First Baptist Church, Door To The Future Building Fund, 150 S. Church St., Mooresville, NC 28115.

Neill Funeral Home in Mooresville is serving the Maddrey family.

Eva J. Holland

CARRSVILLE – Eva Johnson Holland, 92, a native of Hertford County, died September 1, 2008, in Courtland Health Care Center. She was the widow of Jeston A. Holland Sr.

Survivors include two daughters, Lucy H. Cogdell of Chesapeake and Gloria H. Revell of Carrsville; and son, Jeston A. Holland Jr. of Portsmouth.

A funeral will be conducted at noon Saturday in Laurel Hill United Church of Christ, 8001 South Quay Road, Suffolk, by the Rev. Dr. Carl Sweat. Elvin Vaughan Funeral Home, 1717 South St., Franklin, VA, is in charge.

L. Jake Hollowell

TYNER – Leslie Jake Hollowell, 84, a native of Gates County, died September 2, 2008, in Chowan Hospital, Edenton. He was the widower of his first wife, Emma Marie Bunch Hollowell.

Hollowell was a retired manager from Colonial Stores, based in Norfolk, he was a member and deacon of Center Hill Baptist Church, its adult choir, the Senior Adult Sunday school class, the Men’s Brotherhood, and the Chowan Ruritan Club. He was an Army veteran of World War II.

Survivors include his wife, Alene Dale Briggs Hollowell; daughter, Patricia Hensley of Williamsburg; and sons, Dr. William Thomas Hollowell of Apex and Roy Hollowell of Williamsburg; stepsons, R. Wayne Briggs of Boca Raton, Fla., and Allen Dale Briggs of Newport News; 13 grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday in Center Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Reagan Marsh. Graveside services will be conducted at 11 a.m.

Monday in Rosewood Memorial Park, Witchduck Road, Virginia Beach. Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, is in charge. In lieu of flowers contributions may be made to the building fund of Center Hill Baptist Church, P.O. Box 159, Tyner, NC 27980.

Harvey L. Bridgett

BRONX, NY n Harvey Louis Bridgett, 67, died September 3, 2008 at Calvery Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Wednesday at Bazemore Temple Baptist Church, Windsor. Visitation services will be held from 7-8 p.m. Tuesday at Gilliam Funeral Home, Windsor. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Nicholas Cayden “Dink” Brown

AULANDER – Baby Boy, Nicholas Cayden “Dink” Brown, was taken to be with his Lord at the tender age of seven weeks. To the parents of Dink he was truly a miracle child.

Only here for a short time, he did fill the hearts of his family with a tremendous amount of love.

The wound that is left in the hearts of this family can only be filled with the precious memories that Dink leaves behind.

Bond with the Lord, feel his presence for He is holding your child.

Survivors include, his mother and father, Lindsey and James Brown, his brother, Caleb Brown of Aulander, maternal grandparents, Sheila and Mike Bradley and Marty Stephenson of Ahoskie, paternal grandparents, Delores and Jimmy Brown of Ahoskie , maternal great grandparents, Bobby and Linda Terry of Aulander and Erva Bradley of Ahoskie, paternal great grandparent, Ella Williams of Ahoskie and maternal great great grandparents, Myrtle and Walter Terry of Ahoskie and Louis Stephenson of Shiloh.

Funeral services will be conducted on Sunday, September 7th at 3:00 P.M. at the Millennium Pentecostal Holiness Church with the Rev. Taylor Latham officiating.

The burial will follow at the Job Cemetery in Aulander.

The family will receive friends anytime at the home of Mike and Sheila Bradley, 153 Hwy 561 West in Ahoskie.

Lucy B. Reed

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Lucy Brenda Reed, 54, died September 3, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

Rev. Matthew R. Silver

Rev. Matthew R. Silver, 83, a native of Halifax County, died August 31, 2008 in High Point, NC. A celebration of life service will be conducted Monday, September 8, 2008 at 11 a.m. at the Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church where he was the pastor. Rev. Timothy Dortch, a cousin of the deceased, of Goldsboro, NC will be the eulogist. The burial will be at Plumline Holy Church in Halifax County, NC.

Rev. Silver was a member of First Baptist Church Weldon, Weldon, NC.

Rev. Silver’s body will be ready for viewing Sunday, September 7, 2008 from 2:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Cofield Funeral Home in Weldon, NC.

Rev. Silver accepted the call to the gospel ministry in 1947 and was ordained in 1951. He holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree and a Master of Divinity Degree from Shaw University, Raleigh, NC.

After relocating in Roanoke Rapids, NC, Rev. Silver was employed with the Department of Corrections as a chaplain.

Rev. Silver accepted the call of interim pastor of Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church in 1988, and on January 6, 1989, he was voted in as pastor. He has been a good Shepherd, a wise teacher, a spirit-filled pastor and an enduring friend.

Rev. Silver has directed the church with spiritual motivation and progressive leadership for both adults and youth.

Rev. Silver’s greatest aspiration was to move forward with kingdom building.

He leaves to morn his memory, his wife, Janice Silver; his children, Dr. Matthew R. Silver, II of Maryland, Marquitta Silver-Marsh of Maryland, Monica Boyd of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, Joseph Silver and Jerome Silver, both of Maryland and Kim Cooper of Greensboro, NC; his sisters, Marvis Storrs of Roanoke Rapids and Ida Wiggins of New York; 11 grandchildren; many great-grandchildren; nieces, nephews and relatives.

Cofield Funeral Home is in charge of the service.

ROCKY MOUNT n Jonas Smith, died September 5, 2008 at Nash Rehabilitation and Nursing Center, Rocky Mount.

AHOSKIE n Memorial services for Peter Roussis will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Higher Ground Pentecostal Holiness Church.

Jean Dell’Acqua

SPRUCE PINE n Jean Long Dell’Acqua, 66, formerly of Severn, died September 4, 2008.

Mrs. Dell’Acqua was a former member of Severn United Methodist Church.

A graveside service will be conducted at 1 p.m. Monday at Severn Cemetery by the Rev. Sidney Collins. The family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Sunday at Massey Funeral Home, Jackson.

Survivors include her daughter, Vivian Dell’Acqua of Spruce Pine; a sister, Margaret Ann Bayer of Knoxville, Tenn.; and a brother, Sam Long of Richmond, Va.

Lettie M. Sessoms

PAMONA, CA n Lettie Mae Sessoms, died September 4, 2008 at San Antonio Community Hospital, Upland, CA.
