LASKER – Two local teams did battle Tuesday afternoon.

Northeast Academy hosted Lawrence Academy in a pivotal Tarheel Independent Conference volleyball match, with the visiting Warriors edging the home team in five sets.

“This is the first time we’ve played more than three sets with Lawrence,” Northeast Academy Head Coach Cap Pfeiffer said. “We’re playing like a team. I don’t think we’re doing bad for a team just beginning our fifth year of existence.”

Northeast took the first set 25-19, but Lawrence rallied to take sets two and three by counts of 25-19 and 25-18.

The Lady Eagles came back to take set number four 25-22 and force a fifth and deciding game. That was won by the Lady Warriors 15-10.

Lawrence was paced by Ashtyn Mizelle who had 17 kills and 10 digs to go along with two aces. Senior Debbie Stotesbury was also excellent during the contest, recording 31 assists as well as 10 digs and six aces.

Danielle Davis, in her first varsity season, had five kills, four digs, three aces and two blocks while Shelby Zube had 12 kills, six digs and three aces.

Rounding out the Lawrence attack were Taylor Sexton (eight assists, three digs and two aces) and Jennifer White (four digs, three aces, three kills).

Northeast was led by Callie Burgess who had five blocks, three kills, two tips, one dig and one ace as well as Kelly Sykes, who had four aces, two kills and one block.

Cameron Flythe had three kills, two aces and one dig during the afternoon while Lacy Pfeiffer checked in with six digs, two kills and an ace. Jennifer Sykes provided two aces, two kills, two tips, one block and one dig while Molly Hargrave had two aces and one kill.

In the junior varsity contest, Northeast claimed a straight-set win over Lawrence, recording set victories of 25-8 and 25-20.

“They seem to enjoy playing together,” said Pfeiffer, who also coaches the jayvees at Northeast. “They are working as a team.”

Northeast was paced by Brittney Bolton who had three aces and two digs while Dayna Barnes had six aces. Sarah Best had two aces while Lindsey Bryant checked in with one ace, one kill and one tip.

Lawrence was led by the three aces of Jordyn Lyle.
