JACKSON – The recent Labor Day weekend “Booze It & Lose It” campaign proved fruitful for Northampton County law enforcement agencies.

According to Jackson Police Chief John Young, five checking stations were conducted all across the county for the campaign, which is part of Governor Michael Easley’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP).

The checking stations were located in Gaston, Seaboard, Woodland, Conway and Jackson and involved the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office as well as the Jackson, Seaboard, Gaston, Rich Square and Conway Police Departments.

Young said the campaign yielded 41 total charges, including one driving while impaired (DWI), a felony drug possession charge, four misdemeanor drug charges and various traffic violations.

Young called the county’s “Booze It & Lose It” campaign “very successful.”

Local law enforcement agencies were also involved with another recent campaign held in the beginning of August, specifically on 08-08-08, to remind motorists of the state’s blood alcohol concentration limit of .08.

Last year, 488 North Carolinians died as a result of alcohol-related crashes and more than 9,000 were seriously injured.
