MURFREESBORO n Nancy E. Gatling, 85, a native of Hertford County, died August 24, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Parker’s Grove Missionary Baptist Church by the Elder Keith Gatling and the Rev. Fernando Temple Sr. Burial will be in the Gatling family cemetery. Public viewing will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Friday. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her husband, Eley Gatling Sr. of Murfreesboro; three sons, Eley Gatling Jr. and Michael Gatling, both of Baltimore, Md., and Keith Gatling of Varina, Va.; five daughters, Ella Badham of Murfreesboro, Addie Dovie of Surry, Angela Jones of Kenansville, Debra Reames of Glenn Allen and Shelia Sith of Covington, Ga.; 16 grandchildren; and 11 great-grandchildren.

Ronnie Riddick

FLORIDA n Ronnie “Antwan” Riddick, formerly of Gates County, died August 22, 2008 in Florida.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday in Zion Tabernacle Baptist Church, Corapeake. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, is in charge.

Survivors include his wife, Leteshia Cross Riddick of the home; one daughter, Alana Symone Riddick of Myanmar, Fla.; one son, Ronnie Amari Riddick of Myanmar; his father, Ronnie L. Riddick of Gates; his mother, Patricia H. Riddick of Gates; one sister, Ta’Aisha Wilson of Durham; two brothers, Shaun T. Riddick of Hampton, Va., and Brandon Patrick Riddick of Greensboro; and his grandparents, Rosa H. Sessoms and Robert Hunter, both of Ahoskie and Sarah Riddick of Gates.

Joe M. Drake

JACKSON n Joe Matt Drake, 88, died August 26, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

Drake was a WWII Army veteran. He was a lifetime member of Rehoboth United Methodist Church and retired from the Northampton County School System.

Survivors include his wife, Dorothy Drake; a son, Donald Drake of Alabama; his brother, “Bunny” Drake of Jackson; and his sisters, Ruth Barrett of Roanoke Rapids, Helen Barnes of Jackson, Annie Warren of Norfolk, Va., and Deanie Collier of Lasker.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Friday at Rehoboth United Methodist Church by the Rev. Leon Fowler. Burial will be in Jackson Cemetery. The family will receive friends at Massey Funeral Home from 7-8:30 p.m. Thursday and other times at the home. Memorial contributions may be made to Rehoboth United Methodist Church or to the charity of one’s choice.

Mark Myrick

COMO n Mark Myrick, 61, a native of Hertford County, died August 22, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Survivors include his daughter, Connie Bowser of Como; his sister, Edna Carter of Washington; and three grandchildren.

Myrick was retired from Severn Peanut Company.

Services are incomplete. Hunter’s Funeral Home is in charge.

James B. Moore

AHOSKIE n James B. “Buddy” Moore, 94, a native of Hertford County, died August 26, 2008 at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

He was a member of New Ahoskie Baptist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Vonnie Roberts and Ida Mason; one son, James E. Moore; and 21 grandchildren.

Ralph Garner

WASHINGTON, D.C. n Ralph Lee Garner, 55, died August 21, 2008 at his residence.

A memorial service will be conducted at 11 am. Thursday at United House of Prayer for all People, Washington. A visitation will be held Saturday from 11 a.m. to 12 noon in the chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home, Roanoke Rapids. Interment will be in the Byrd family cemetery.

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Infant Taylor Denise Williams died August 25, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center.

Silas M. Lassiter

CONWAY n Silas Marion Lassiter, 87, died Tuesday, August 26, 2008 at Roanoke Chowan Hospital in Ahoskie.

He had been preceded in death by his grandson, Jeremy Shroats, and

parents, Silas F. and Jessie Helen Lassiter.

A native of Northampton County, he was a farmer and was, also, retired after 35 years of service as a Technical Representative with several Agro-Chemical Companies.

He was a lifelong member of Conway United Methodist Church having been involved in all areas of church service including Lay Leader, Sunday School Superintendent, and various church Boards, was on the Board of Directors for First Citizens Bank, Board of Directors for Roanoke Chowan Hospital, Northampton County Board of Education, was a Town of Conway Commissioner and was one of the founding members of University Health Systems Hospice in Ahoskie. Also, he was a member of the Conway Ruritan Club, a Master Mason in Pendleton Masonic Lodge No. 418, and while attending Atlantic Christian College was a star basketball player, later, to be inducted into their Sports Hall of Fame in October of 1998, and he was a

proud World War II Army Air Corp Veteran serving in the South Pacific Theater.

His greatest remembrance will be as a caring husband, father, grandfather and great grandfather.

Survivors include his wife of 62 years, Anne Holloman Lassiter of their home; one son, Joe Lassiter and his wife, Kathy, of Kill Devil Hills; one daughter, Judy L. Shroats and her husband, Dave, of Lillington; four grandchildren, Ian Lassiter, Emily Lassiter, Evan Miller, and Lauren Shroats Taylor; two great grandchildren, Aiden and Avery Taylor; and one sister, Helen Louise Lassiter of Conway.

Funeral services will be held Friday, 11:00 A.M. in Conway United Methodist Church with Rev. Robert Hill and Rev. John Butson presiding and with special comments by Rev. C.B. Owens.

Burial will follow in the Town of Conway Cemetery.

Emma Askew Taylor

POWELLSVILLE n Ms. Emma Askew Taylor, 100, died August 24, 2008 at Guardian Care Nursing Home, Ahoskie.

Mrs. Taylor was a member of Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church. She was the daughter of Walter and Hattie Weaver Askew. She was born in Bertie County, on February 22, 1908. She was the mother of two children. One daughter, Ola Mae Saunders; and a son, Clarence Taylor, who preceded her in death. She had one sister, Frances Hoggard of Philadelphia, PA. She has nine grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; and 16 great-great-grandchildren.

Mrs. Emma was the wife of the late James Taylor for over 50 years. They were the owners of Taylor Grocery on Maple St., in Ahoskie, for over 15 years or more. Later about 1962 they built Taylor Grocery Store in Powellsville, where they operated it until retiring in the 1970’s.

Emma was a member of the Elk’s Lodge, Eastern Star and a Missionary at Piney Wood Chapel Baptist Church.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday, August 29, 2008, at Piney Wood Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, by Dr. Roosevelt Askew Jr. Burial will be in the Askew family cemetery, Ahoskie. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge of arrangements.

MURFREESBORO n Gwendolyn L. Lassiter, 52, a native of Hertford County, died August 23, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at First Baptist Church of Murfreesboro by the Rev. Robert Richardson. Burial will be in the Vaughan family cemetery. Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, is in charge.

Survivors include her mother, Bessie Vaughan of Murfreesboro; children, Kenneth Casterlow and Mattew Casterlow Jr., both of Murfreesboro and Darin Vaughan of Raleigh; brothers and sister, Selton Vaughan of Murfreesboro, Micheal Vaughan, Earl Vaughan Jr. and Leroy Vaughan, all of Murfreesboro, and Janice Pierce of Philadelphia, PA; and seven grandchildren.
