Kailique D. Deloatch

MURFREESBORO – Kailique D’mari Deloatch, 18 months old, son of Alvin Lassiter and Quanisha Deloatch, both of Murfreesboro, died August 8, 2008 at his residence.

Kailique was a native of Hertford County.

Other survivors include his brothers, Yzhunique Rogers of Conway and Shukhari Deloatch and Shamiel Smith, both of Murfreesboro; and his grandparents, Lillian Lassiter of Murfreesboro, Alvin Tann of Farmville, MD, and Addie and Norman Deloatch, both of Conway.

A graveside service will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Jerusalem Baptist Church, Woodland. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Destiny T. Cowper

AHOSKIE – Destiny Tarshay Cowper, 13 days old, infant daughter of Glenn M. Cowper and Tarsha Reese Cowper, both of Ahoskie, died August 10, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Destiny was a native of Hertford County.

Other survivors include her sisters, Jakiya Gaynell Williams and Jakhiya Elise Reese, both of Ahoskie; her grandparents, Raymond Reese and Joann B. Williams, both of Mapleton and Glenn Cowper of Murfreesboro; and her great-grandparents, Gladys Reese of Conway and Mary Bishop of Mapleton.

A funeral was conducted Friday at Second Baptist Creeksville Church, Conway, by the Rev. Rawlings Sr. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, was in charge.

Mary Lou Berry

PORTSMOUTH, Va.

– Mary Lou Berry, 87, died August 12, 2008, in Augusta Medical Center in Fishersville. She was the widow of Russell “Bubby” Berry.

Survivors include three children,, Russell W. Berry Jr. of Suffolk, Gail Dobbs of Staunton, Lee Berry of Rogue River, Ore.; sister, Nancy Stallings of Hobbsville; six grandchildren, six great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.

Mrs. Berry was a lifelong member of Jackson Memorial Baptist Church and very active in her Sunday school class. She retired from the Portsmouth school system as a library clerk having worked in several schools in Portsmouth.

Services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday in Jackson Memorial Baptist Church, Chesapeake, by the Rev. H.B. Jackie Allen Jr. Burial will be in Greenlawn Memorial Gardens. Millard T. Layden Sr.

TYNER – Millard Thomas &uot;Shorty&uot; Layden Sr., 68, a native of Perquimans County, died August 13, 2008, in his home.

Layden was a retired mechanical supervisor with Lipton Tea in Suffolk after 32 years of employment, he was a member of Center Hill Baptist Church where he had served as a deacon and was active in the Men’s Brotherhood and the adult choir.

Survivors include his wife of nearly 48 years, Carolyn Chappell Layden; a daughter, Debbie L. Whitehurst; a son, Millard T. Layden Jr., both of Tyner; three sisters, Ruth Ann Riddick of Smithfield, Va., Betty Lois Lane of Orlando, Fla. and Marvis Parrish of Hertford; three brothers, James O. Layden Jr. and Kenneth Ray Layden Sr., both of Belvidere and Wesley E. Layden Sr. of Hobbsville; and three granddaughters.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday in Center Hill Baptist Church by the Rev. Reagan Marsh and the Rev. Don English. Burial will be in the Chappell Family Cemetery on Hunter’s Fork Road. Friends may join the family Saturday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home & Crematory, 735 Virginia Road, Edenton, and all other times at the home.

Frank W. Hollowell Jr.

ELIZABETH CITY – Frank Whiteley Hollowell Jr., 88, a native of Portsmouth, Va., died August 13, 2008, at his home in Weeksville. He was the widower Elizabeth Vaughan Hollowell.

After a career in the Navy, he retired as commander in 1964 and moved back to Elizabeth City, where he managed his family farms in Elizabeth City and Bethel. He served on many boards including the Federal Land Bank of Ahoskie and Girls Inc.

Survivors include his son, Frank &uot;Whit&uot; Hollowell of Richmond Hill, Ga.; a daughter Abbey H. Manning of Elizabeth City; two stepsons, Robert Keely and Douglas Vaughan Keely of Naples, Fla.; and three grandchildren.

The family will receive friends Saturday from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Twiford Funeral Home, Elizabeth City, (252) 335-4395. A private memorial service will be held for the family at a later date. ROCKY MOUNT n Nancy Gray Jones, 77, died August 9, 2008 at her residence.

Linda Bryant

MURFREESBORO n Linda Bryant, died August 12, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Conoconary Baptist Church, Aulander, by the Rev. Milton Lee. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge.

Survivors include a son, Joshua Bryant of Murfreesboro; four brothers, Bobby Outlaw, Horace, Louis E. and Dennie S. Cherry, all of Ahoskie; and one sister, Myra L. Bunch, also of Ahoskie.

Alexander Ruffin Sr.

ROCKY MOUNT n Alexander Ruffin Sr., 68, died August 10, 2008.

Vernon C. Ward

RICH SQUARE – Vernon Christopher Ward, 83, a native of Northampton County, died August 13, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Ward was a trustee at Cumbo Chapel Baptist Church, Rich Square. He retired in 1992 from North Carolina Department of Transportation.

Survivors include his wife, Cora Ward

the home; sons, Vernard “Jackie” Ward of Aliquippa, PA and Garrett Ward of Durham; daughters, Peggy Ward Longhurst of Midland, Arnicia Forbes of Newport News, VA, Audrey Ward of Raleigh and Yarlanda Frazier of Durham; a brother, Harold Ward of Rich Square; a sister, Audrey Alston of Hampton; and two grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday at Cumbo Chapel Baptist Church, by the Rev. Tony Flood. Burial will be in the Stewart family cemetery. Wilder’s Funeral Home, Rich Square, is in charge.

Grace L. Chamblee

AHOSKIE n Grace Lendora Chamblee, 75, a native of Mullins, SC, died August 13, 2008 at her residence.

She was a member of Greater Wynn’s Grove Baptist Church, Colerain and last worked at Perdue.

Survivors include a son, Charles Ray Woodberry Chamblee of Maryland; daughters, Geraldine Harmon of Hampton, VA, Sylvia Brooks and Lestine Brooks, both of Ahoskie, and Earlene Woodberry of Maryland; a brother, William “Bill” Bradley of Miami, FL; 21 grandchildren; and 23 great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 3 p.m. Monday at Greater Wynn’s Grove Baptist Church, Colerain, by Bishop Thomas Lee. Burial will be in the Chamblee family cemetery, Ahoskie. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Bloomer E. Dukes Liverman

AHOSKIE n Bloomer E. Dukes Liverman, 102, loving called “Grandma” by many, passed away on August 15, 2008 at Rich Square Health Care Center, Rich Square.

Bloomer Elizabeth Dukes was born in the Union Township on February 4, 1906 to John Thomas “Tom” Dukes and Mary Newsome Dukes. She was the third of 10 children: She attended both Union and St. John’s Training Schools.

In 1924 she married James Stewart Liverman and to this union six (6) children: James “Bo” of Woodland, Mable Lee of Ahoskie, John Thomas, Theodore, Mary E. and Eunice, all deceased.

Liverman’s occupation included working on a farm and providing housekeeping services. She retired in 1979 at the age of 73.

She received the Lord Jesus as Savior as a child. In later years she began to systematically study God’s Word and rededicated her life to the Lord for His services.

She was a member of Second Baptist Union Church. For many years she sang in the Senior Choir and has served as secretary and president of the choir. She also served as Sunday School Secretary and was an honorary member of the Willing Workers Club.

For many years she did volunteer work in the Triple “C” Ministry such as: Newsletter staff, helping in the kitchen during camp and watching the campers on the playground.

In 2000, at the age of 94, grandma graduated from the Triple “C” Bible Institute.

Some of her favorite things to do have been fishing, reading her Bible, and doing word search puzzles. She reads through the entire Bible once a year and has done so 12 times.

For many years she ate fish everyday for breakfast or another meal.

She was loved by all who came in contact with her.

She is survived by 14 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren; and 28 great-great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Second Baptist Union Church, Ahoskie, by the Rev. M. Bryan Pierce. Interment will be in Menola Baptist Church Cemetery, Woodland. Reynolds Funeral Home, Inc., Ahoskie, is in charge of arrangements.
