WINDSOR – The county seat in Bertie County is working to ensure future water supply.

During Thursday morning’s meeting of the Windsor Board of Commissioners, the town leaders voted to commit $300,000 in funds to construct a well north of town.

According to Town Administrator Alan Castelloe, the town lost some capacity from a current well and began the process of trying to add more water supply.

“We did some work on the well that we call the Country Club Well, but the bottom line is we lost some capacity there,” he said. “We have a need for more capacity within the town and also a need to find a water supply with less fluoride. That is the objective with the new well.”

Windsor received a $500,000 grant from the North Carolina Rural Economic Development Center for the new well and committed their $300,000 portion at Thursday’s meeting.

According to Castelloe, the town will have a contract in place be September and begin design in November. The timetable continues with permits being secured in April of 2009 followed by advertising for bids in June.

Construction is slated to begin in July of next year with a target date of completion in December.

While the town wishes to add supply, Castelloe said there are no concerns currently.

“This is in anticipation of future growth as well as to insure adequate water supply for the present and the future,” he said.
