MERRY HILL – Everyone will get a barometer.

Saturday morning, a foursome of eight-man football teams will gather here to gauge how far they’ve come since practice began and what areas still have to be addressed.

The Lawrence Academy Football Jamboree enters year three with the Warriors hosting their annual event beginning at 10:30 a.m. This year Lawrence welcomes Northeast Academy, Halifax Academy and Hobgood Academy.

“We’re excited about having the other teams coming to Merry Hill,” Lawrence Athletic Director Robert Kravitz said. “We encourage people to come out and see the four teams and support them.”

The event will see a series of 10-play drives featuring each offense and each defense. It will close with a goal line stand.

Lawrence Head Football Coach Mike Dail said he was looking forward to the opportunities presented by the scrimmage.

“I think it’s a good chance to see a lot of difference offenses and defenses and how you line up against them,” Dail said. “When you can do all of that in one morning, it has got to help.”

Dail said he was happy with what he had seen from his team leading up to the scrimmage.

“Practice has been going well. I’m really pleased,” he said. “We’re still young, especially up front, but they’re coming around. We’ll be a little bigger this year and are much better with our numbers and that’s always encouraging.”

For his part, Northeast Academy Head Football Coach Collin Sneed was looking forward to be event, but cautious at the same time.

“I’m looking forward to going over there and seeing some different faces instead of hitting our own,” he said. “On the other hand, I just hope we don’t get anyone hurt. We’re thin on our varsity squad this year and we can’t afford any injuries.”

Sneed said he was pleased with the early-season practices.

“Practice has been going reasonably well,” he said. “We have a couple of bumps and bruises. We also have a totally new offensive line, so we have a lot to work on, but I see us progressing.”

The gates are set to open at 9:30 a.m. Saturday and there will be no charge for admission. Chicken plates will be on sale for $7 during the event.
