JACKSON – A recent “Booze It & Lose It” campaign was successful for Northampton County law enforcement agencies.

A one day “Booze It & Lose It” campaign, which is part of the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program (GHSP), was held on Friday

The campaign was held specifically on 08-08-08 to remind motorists of the state’s blood alcohol concentration limit of .08.

According to Jackson Police Chief John Young, the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office, the North Carolina State Highway Patrol along with the Conway, Rich Square, Jackson, Seaboard and Garysburg Police Departments all took part in the county-wide campaign.

The agencies conducted motorist checkpoints, three of which were in Rich Square, Pleasant Hill and Garysburg.

“In our campaign we had 26 arrests and citations, three of which were driving while impaired (offenses),” said Young, who serves as a coordinator for Northampton County’s GHSP.

Young said the remainder of the citations were for traffic violations, from driving while license revoked to expired inspection tags.

“This was done obviously for public safety,” said Young. “It was very well organized.”

Young said a more lengthy “Booze It & Lose It” campaign will begin this Friday (August 15) and continue until September 1.

Last year, 488 North Carolinians died as a result of alcohol-related crashes and more than 9,000 were seriously injured.
