JACKSON – A local man is facing charges for alleged sexual offenses that occurred three decades ago.

According to Detective Lieutenant Brenda Burnette with the Northampton County Sheriff’s Office (NCSO), John Alton Brown Sr., 63 of Conway, was taken into custody on July 21 and charged with three counts of indecent liberties with a child, which are felonies.

Burnette said the charges stem from a report filed with NCSO on March 30 that alleged Brown committed sexual offenses on two young females in the late 1970s.

Burnette said the children were 9 and 10-years-old when the alleged crimes occurred at the suspect’s former home, which was located off Highway 35 in Conway.

The sexual offenses were allegedly carried out on one of the victims in 1976, 1977 and 1978, according to Burnette. The crimes on the other victim allegedly occurred in August 1979.

Burnette said one of the females was related to the suspect, while the other child was of no relation to Brown.

Brown turned himself in and taken into custody on July 21 after Burnette made contact with him about the case.

He was taken to the Northampton County Jail and placed under a $10,000 secured bond. His next scheduled court appearance is slated for August 21.

As to why it took so long for the alleged crimes to be reported, Burnette said she could not say at this point.
