MURFREESBORO – Attentive police work has led to the arrest of two men believed to have been involved in a rash of burglaries here.

According to Murfreesboro Police Chief Darrell Rowe, Donald Ray Manley, 27 of Maney’s Neck Mobile Home Park near Murfreesboro, and William Roger Vaughan, 49 of Franklin Drive in Murfreesboro, were arrested on Monday.

Both Manley and Vaughan were charged with two counts of breaking and entering, one count of larceny and one count of possession of stolen goods.

Rowe said early Monday morning, Murfreesboro Police Officers Will Barmer and Chris Owens responded to a call in reference to a breaking and entering at Ray’s Detail Shop on Main Street.

When the officers arrived they discovered there had been an attempted break-in at the business. Rowe said the officers spoke to the owner and collected evidence at the scene, which included blood near a broken window.

Upon Barmer and Owens returning to normal patrol, they noticed a small white pickup truck on Main Street.

The officers were able to make contact with the occupants when they found the truck parked behind Manley’s Upholstery Shop across from the old Red Apple.

Rowe said Vaughan was the driver of the truck and Manley was the passenger.

While speaking with the suspects, the officers observed numerous items in the back of the vehicle, including an air compressor, a battery charger and other hand tools.

Barmer and Owens then decided to separate the two suspects for interviews.

“The officers noticed a cut on Mr. Manley’s finger,” said Rowe.

Rowe continued by saying there was also blood on Manley’s pants. The officers also noticed Manley had placed socks over his shoes, allegedly as an attempt not to leave behind footprints.

Rowe said these observations led the officers to believe the men may have been involved with the attempted breaking and entering they were just investigating.

Lieutenant Joe Burgess responded to assist the two officers in the investigation.

Rowe said two screw drivers were found on Manley, which were believed to be used as prying tools. After further investigation, both men were taken into custody.

Rowe noted the rash of break-ins the town has been experiencing and said the two suspects could be facing more charges.

Manley and Vaughan were taken to the Hertford County Jail; Manley was placed on a $30,000 bond and Vaughan was placed on a $20,000 bond.

“I’m very proud of the officers for really putting forth a strong effort to enforce the laws in Murfreesboro,” said Rowe.
