WINTON – It has been one year since Hazel Privott, the much-loved and longtime Nutrition Site Manager at R.L. Vann in Ahoskie, passed away.

Ahoskie Mayor Linda Blackburn brought a proposal before the Hertford County Commissioners on Monday that would honor Privott’s memory and preserve her name forever.

“We are requesting consideration for renaming the R.L. Vann Nutrition Site in honor of Ms. Privott and her many years of dedicated service in the Nutritional Program at the Office of Aging,” Blackburn stated in a letter given to Hertford County Manager Loria Williams prior to the meeting.

Privott attended school at R.L. Vann as a young girl, then returned to work in the cafeteria, serving as the cafeteria manager for many years, and ended her career at the nutrition site after working there for more than 30 years.

Several commissioners remembered Privott from their days at R.L. Vann or at the nutrition site.

“I remember her very well; that’s where I went to school… she stuck with it for quite some time,” remarked Commissioner Dupont Davis.

Commissioner Curtis Freeman added, “Most people when they think of Ms. Privott, they think of the nutrition site, but for me it goes back a little further than that… I remember the summer feeding program when I was a boy, she was always there… she was like a second mother away from home and always made us behave.

That meant a lot to most of us.”

Commission Chair Howard Hunter III suggested naming the site after Privott by calling it the Hazel S. Privott Nutrition Center and under that listing it as the “R.L. Vann site” instead of the Ahoskie site as it currently states.

“Everybody knows R.L. Vann is in Ahoskie anyway,” Hunter stated.

Commissioner John Pierce made a motion to grant the name change, with Freeman offering a second.

The measure passed unanimously.

The Area Agency on Aging, with whom Privott also has a history, had previously offered to pay for the new sign for the building if the commissioners approved the name change.
