WINTON – Preliminary AYP (Adequate Yearly Progress) mathematics results have been released for Hertford County Schools.

Bearfield Primary, located in Ahoskie, was the only school out of the five in the system to make 100 percent AYP, with 13 out of 13 target goals.

Riverview Elementary School followed closely behind, making 11 out of 13 target goals (84.6 percent).

Hertford County Middle School achieved 12 out of 16 target goals (75 percent).

Ahoskie Elementary School met 11 out of 16 target goals (68.8 percent) and Hertford County High School performed the poorest, making just five out of 13 target goals (38.5 percent).

AYP began being measured in North Carolina after the federal No Child Left Behind Act passed in 2001.

It measures the yearly progress of different groups of students at the school, district and state levels against a yearly target in reading and mathematics.

Proficiency target goals are set increasingly higher in three-year increments until 2013-14 when 100 percent proficiency is expected in all schools in each school district.

According to the North Carolina Department of Instruction, if just one student group in one subject (mathematics or reading) at a school does not meet the targeted proficiency goal, then the school does not make AYP for that year.

The No Child Left Behind Act sanctions schools receiving Title I funds who do not meet AYP in the same subject for consecutive years.

The more years a school does not meet its AYP target in the same subject, the more severe the sanctions become.

Hertford’s preliminary results do not include reading.
