Walter Sherman Dunlow

MERRY HILL – Walter Sherman Dunlow, 74, of 120 Lellie Hughes Road, died Friday, July 25, 2008 in Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor.

Mr. Dunlow was born in Bertie County and was the son of the late William Miles and Texanne Mizelle Dunlow.

A retired farmer and member of Riverside Baptist Church, he was also a US Army veteran.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Cathleen Byrum, and a brother, Teny Dunlow.

Surviving are his wife, Jeanette Bell Dunlow; two daughters, Judy Collier and husband Mitch of Fairfax Station, VA, Dana Lyle and husband Donald of Cary, NC; a son, Allen Dunlow and wife Susan of Silver Spring, MD; two sisters Doris Lee of South Mills and Betty Mizelle of Colerain; a brother Ronald Dunlow of Chesapeake, VA; seven grandchildren, Dana and Kelly Collier, Bailey and Brooke Lyle, and Michael, Morgan and Ryan Dunlow.

Funeral services were held Sunday at 3:00 p.m. in Riverside Baptist Church.

Burial followed in the church cemetery with military honors being accorded.

Friends joined the family Saturday from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in Miller Funeral Home, 735 Virginia Rd., Edenton, and all other times at the residence.

Mildred M. Martin

MURFREESBORO – Mrs. Mildred M. Martin, age 84, of Murfreesboro died Saturday, July 26, 2008 at her home.

 Mrs. Martin was born February 4, 1924 in Northampton County, NC, the daughter of the late Grover Martin and Essie Britt Martin.  She was also preceded in death by three brothers, Charles Martin, Sidney Martin and Clarence Martin.  She was a member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church.

Survivors include her husband of 64 years, Ezra Samuel Martin. Her daughter, Diane Seidemann and her husband Michael of Kenner, Louisiana. Her sisters, Ella Mae Watson, Janie Martin Outland, both of Conway, NC, Mary M. Cahoon and Myrtle M. Revelle, both of Portsmouth, VA, Doris M. Vincent of Murfreesboro, NC, Lillian M. Howerton of Rich Square, NC and Gladys M. Wheeler of Goldsboro, NC.  Two brothers, Kelly C. Martin and Dennis Martin, both of Conway, NC.  Two grandchildren, Ryan and Erin Seidemann and two great grandchildren, Elizabeth and Michael Seidemann.

Funeral services will be held, Tuesday, July 29, 2008 at 2:00 PM at Murfreesboro Baptist Church with Dr. Lee Canipe officiating.  Burial will follow at Riverside Cemetery in Murfreesboro.

The family received friends at Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC,  Monday from 7:00 until 8:30 PM.

Horace Elwood Dunlow

WINDSOR – Horace Elwood Dunlow, 80, of 116 RC Road, died Saturday, July 26, 2008 at his home.

He was born in Bertie County on September 3, 1927 to the late Joseph and Louise Cowan Dunlow and was predeceased by a sister, Alease Harmon and two brothers, Russell and Darius Dunlow. Horace was the owner and operator of Horace’s Body Shop until his retirement and was a member of Askewville Baptist Church.

The Rev. David Baker held a graveside service at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 28, 2008 at the Dunlow Family Cemetery. The family received friends at Walker Funeral Home on Sunday from 7-8:30 p.m. and at other times from the home. Survivors include his wife, Frances Hoggard Dunlow of Windsor, NC; daughters, Donna and husband Henry Jernigan of Colerain, NC and Cathy Dunlow and friend Gene Hughes of Windsor, NC; son, Larry and wife Deborah Dunlow of Edenton, NC; a sister, Sadie D. Harrell of Ahoskie;

seven grandchildren, Joe Dunlow and Jennifer Cullipher of Colerain, Danny Johnson of Greenville, Amanda Nelms of Aulander, Toni House of Pigeon Forge, TN, Michelle White of Windsor and Scott Dunlow of Edenton; and 12 great-grandchildren.

Attie R. Cornette

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Attie Renda Harrison Cornette, a native of Bertie County, died July 27, 2008. She was the widow of James Leroy Cornette.

Mrs. Cornette was a member of Ross Baptist Church in Bertie County.

Survivors include her daughters,

Barbara C. Reel and Bonnie C. Revell; brothers, Joseph A. and Ernest Harrison; three granddaughters; and five great-grandchildren.

The family will receive friends at Hollomon-Brown Funeral Home, Great Bridge Chapel, Tuesday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Chesapeake Memorial Gardens. Emily V. Piland

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – Emily Virginia Piland, 89, a native of Gates County, died July 25, 2008.

Miss Piland retired as a clerk at Norfolk Naval Shipyard and was a charter member of Bethany Baptist Church.

Survivors include two nieces.
