Augustus Jarrell

ENFIELD n Augustus “Peeco” Jarrell, 80, died July 21,2008 at Nash General Hospital, Rocky Mount.

Funeral arrangements are incomplete. H.D. Pope Funeral Home is in charge.

Catherine Hayer

CORAPEAKE n Catherine Hayer, 71, died July 21, 2008 at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Union Branch Missionary Baptist Church, Corapeake, by the Rev. Nathaniel Thomas. Burial will be in the church cemetery. Stallings Funeral Chapel, Gatesville, is in charge.

Survivors include one daughter, Sharon Hayer of the home; three sons, Alain Hayer of Corapeake, Jeffrey Hayer of Pleasantville and Charlie Hayer Sr. of Suffolk, Va.; two sisters, Miriam Walker of Corapeake and Velma Johnson of Newark, NJ; two brothers, Thomas Hayer of Newark and George Hayer of Fayetteville; 11 grandchildren; and eight great-grandchildren.

Dorothy J. Williams

MURFREESBORO n Mrs. Dorothy James Williams, age 84, died Wednesday, July 23, 2008 at her home.

Mrs. Williams was born January 31, 1924, the daughter of the late Willie Oscar and Estelle Mooley James. She was predeceased by her husband, William “Bill” “Pops’ Williams and a daughter, Frances Kay Tinkam. She was a member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church where she was a member of the WMU. She was also a member of the Murfreesboro Women’s Club where she served as treasurer for many years. She was always known as a great cook, who loved to fix chocolate pies and delicious chicken salad for her family and friends.

Left to cherish her memory is her sons, William Thomas “Billy” Williams, Jr. and James Edward “Jimmy” Williams of Murfreesboro, NC. Her daughter, Mary Beth Williams Ogburn of Oklahoma City, OK; Ten grandchildren; and nine adorable great-grandchildren.

Graveside services will be held, Saturday, July 26, 2008 at 11 a.m. at Ashley’s Grove Baptist Church Cemetery with Rev. David Ross officiating.

The family received friends at Murfreesboro Baptist Church, Friday from 7:00-8:30 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to University Hospice, Ahoskie, NC 27910, Murfreesboro Baptist Church, P.O. Box 124, Murfreesboro, NC 27855 or charity of one’s choice.

Arrangements are being handled by Massey Funeral Home in Jackson, NC.

Mary Shell Duke

MURFREESBORO

n Mary Shell Duke, 81, of the 300 block of West High Street, died Monday, July 21, 2008, at Rich Square Villa.

Miss Duke was born in Hertford County, a daughter of the late Jack V. and Viola F. Duke.  She was a member of Murfreesboro Baptist Church and was a caregiver for most of her life.  Having never had children of her own, Shell treated her nieces and cousins as her own children.  She was very family oriented and the best cook around.

Left to cherish her memory is her brother, Ryland S. Duke and wife Patricia; nephews, Ryland S. Duke, Jr., and James M. Duke; nieces, Leigh D. Bruner, Donna D. Matthews and Sylvia Duke Carraway; Genevieve W. Duke; and numerous other cousins.

A graveside memorial service will be conducted at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 29, 2008, at Riverside Cemetery, Murfreesboro, with the Rev. Lee Canipe officiating.  The family will gather at Murfreesboro Baptist Church at 10:30 a.m. prior to services and will receive friends at the church fellowship hall following the service.  In lieu of flowers, the family request donations be made to University Health Systems Hospice Care, P.O. Box 272, Ahoskie, NC, 27910; Murfreesboro Baptist Church, P.O. Box 124, Murfreesboro, NC, 27855; or to a charity of choice.

Robert Franklin “Bobby” Davis

ROXOBEL – Mr. Robert Franklin “Bobby” Davis, age 66 died at Pitt Memorial Hospital in Greenville on Wednesday, July 23, 2008.

Mr. Davis is a native Bertie County and graduated from West Bertie High School in 1959.

Following graduation he went to work for J. Lebron Morris Auction House later known as Morris and Davis Auction House in Roxobel.

He was a member of the Sandy Run Baptist Church where he served many capacities, some of which were trustee and deacon.

Mr. Davis served as chief and president of the Roxobel Volunteer Fire Department before retiring.

Preceding him in death are his mother, Polly Hoggard Davis, his father, Lewis T. Davis, Sr., four brothers; John Allen, Pete, Jack and Lewis Davis, Jr.

Survivors include his wife Sandra Morris Davis of the home, two daughters; Kim D. Brown and her husband Andy along with their children Olivia and Avery, and Beverly D. Creech and her husband William along with their son Adam all of Roxobel, one son, Chris Davis and his wife Katy along with their daughter Lucy of Wilmington and one brother, Richard “Dickie” Davis of Austin, TX.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday, July 27, 2008 at 3:30 P.M. at the Sandy Run Baptist Church in Roxobel with Dr. David Rimel and Rev. Henry Boschen officiating.

The interment will follow at the Roxobel-Kelford Cemetery in Roxobel. Sykes Funeral Service, Rich Square, is in charge.

The family will receive friends at the fellowship hall at Sandy Run Baptist Church on Sunday from 2:00-3:00 P.M. prior to the funeral service.

Memorial contributions may be made to Roxobel Fire Department, Lewiston-Woodville EMS or Sandy Run Baptist Church.

Frances Jordan

AHOSKIE n Frances Odell Jordan, 78, a native of Bertie County, died July 22, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

She was a member of Metropolitan Interdenominational Church, Aulander, and last worked on the farm.

Survivors include nieces; and great-nieces.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Aulander. Burial will be in the Jordan family cemetery.

Henry Cumbo

CONWAY n Henry Thomas Cumbo, 84, a native of Northampton County, died July 15, 2008 at Roanoke-Chowan Hospital, Ahoskie.

Cumbo was last employed as a carpenter with Leon Martin Corporation, Inc., and was a member of Allen Chapel Church, Jackson, and served as steward in the church. He was a Mason.

Survivors include a daughter, Annie Newsome of Murfreesboro; a sister, Helen Chestnut of Stonewall; and three grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted at 3 p.m. Saturday at Wilder’s Funeral Home Chapel, Rich Square, by the Rev. Edward Sloan. Burial will be in the Deloatch family cemetery, Conway, with Masonic Rites. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Rich Square, is in charge.

Patricia A. Burgess

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va.

– Patricia A. Burgess died July 22, 2008.

A funeral will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. Sunday in Antioch Missionary Baptist Church, Jackson. Faison’s Funeral Home is in charge.

James E. Martin

PORTSMOUTH, Va. – James E. Martin, 85, a native of Belhaven, died July 23, 2008.

Martin was a retiree from Norfolk Naval Shipyard, he was an active member of Port Norfolk Baptist Church, a former member Portsmouth Moose Lodge and a U.S. Navy Korean War veteran.

Survivors include one daughter, Sandra E. Cartwright of Portsmouth; and four grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Saturday at Snellings Funeral Home, Churchland Chapel. Burial will be in Aulander Cemetery, Aulander. Condolences may be offered to the family at www.snellingsfuneralhome.com.

Walter Dunlow

MERRY HILL – Walter Sherman Dunlow, 74, died July 25, 2008 in Bertie Memorial Hospital, Windsor.

Janie A. Morris

SCOTLAND NECK n Janie Anderson Morris, 89, died Wednesday, July 23, 2008.

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. on Sunday, July 27, 2008 at Sunnyside Cemetery in Scotland Neck. Lee Marks will be presiding.

Janie was preceded in death by her husband, Archie Lee Morris, Sr., and her son, James Lee Morris.

She is survived by her daughters, Ellen M. Williams and husband Archer of North Myrtle Beach, and Kathey Roberson of Williamston; son, Archie Lee “Al” Morris Jr. of Woodland; sisters, Lois Joyner of Wilmington and Frances Winfree of Whitakers; brothers, Alston Anderson and wife Margaret of Rocky Mount, Willie Mack Anderson and wife Myrtle of Whitakers and Phylman Anderson of Scotland Neck; six grandchildren, Tammy Martin, Jeff Futrell, Melissa Spence, Danielle Roberson, Angela Chandler, and Matt Morris; and four great-grandchildren, Allison Futrell, Ashley Martin, Will Martin, and Camden Spence.

Family will receive friends from 12:00-1:00 p.m. Sunday at Letchworth Funeral Home and after the service at the cemetery.

Peggy A. Earley

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. n Peggy A. Earley, died July 25, 2008 at Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital.

A funeral will be conducted at 12 noon Tuesday at Reynolds Funeral Home Chapel, Ahoskie. Burial will be in Hillcrest Cemetery.

Survivors include one brother, William Jerome Earley; and one sister, Frayer Lawrence, both of Virginia Beach.
