Alonzo L. Spivey

AULANDER n Alonzo Lee Spivey, 30, a native of Bertie County, died July 10, 2008.

Spivey was a cook at Bojangles Restaurant, Ahoskie, and former member of Uniontown Disciples Church of Christ, New York.

Survivors include his wife, Cressida P. Spivey of Robersonville; his mother, Floretta Gilliam of Aulander; daughters, Sherston Spivey and Sha’Kyston Spivey; sons, Jalonzo Spivey and Jafonza Spivey; brothers, Craig Gilliam of Windsor and Shanga Spivey of Portsmouth, Va., and Antwan Spivey of Aulander; and a sister, Natasha Jenkins of Ahoskie.

A funeral will be conducted at 1 p.m. Friday at Mt. Ararat Baptist Church, Windsor, by the Rev. James Collins. Burial will be in the Spivey family cemetery, Windsor. Wilder’s Funeral Home Inc., Aulander, is in charge.

Callie Lee Harden Venters

CHESAPEAKE, Va. – Callie Lee Harden Venters, 86, a native of Windsor, died July 13, 2008, at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center. She was the widow of 57 George William Venters.

Mrs. Venters was a homemaker.

Survivors include her son, Horace “Butch” Venters of Rupert, W.Va.; daughter, Bonnie Venters Hawkins of Chesapeake; four grandchildren; and three great-grandchildren.

A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday in the Francis Gay Chapel of Oman Funeral Home & Crematory, 1146 Rodgers St., South Norfolk, by the Rev. Terry Riddle. Melvin Everette

SEVERN n Melvin L. Everette, 53, a native of Southampton, VA, died July 13, 2008 at Guardian Care of Scotland Neck.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday at Hertford County Undertakers, Winton, by the Rev. Shirley Johnson. Burial will be in First Baptist Severn Cemetery, Severn.

Survivors include his mother, Ida G. Everette of Severn; three brothers, Wildon Everette and Howard Everette Jr., both of Severn and Larry Everette of Hampton; and four sisters, Dephine Newsome and Rosaland Thomas, both of Hampton, Bernice Davis of Maryland and Willie Mae Wood of Oklahoma.

Richard Daniel Hofler

HAMPTON, VA – Richard Daniel Hofler, 72, passed away at Hampton Sentara Careplex on Monday, July 14, 2008.

Mr. Hofler worked at NASA for 25 years and was a member of a team that put man on the moon and later led a super computer project. After retiring from NASA, Mr. Hofler was an adjunct professor at Christopher Newport University, George Washington University, and Florida Institute of Technology.

Survivors include his wife, Caren Ludewig; son, Richard Daniel Hofler, wife, Jeanette and granddaughter, Genevieve of New Orleans, La.; two daughters, Alicia Hofler, husband, Geoffrey Krafft and grandchildren, Athena and Konrad of Newport News, Va. and daughter, Annika Hofler of Hampton.

Mr. Hofler is also survived by two brothers, Hance Hofler of Kansas City, Mo. and James Hofler of Kill Devil Hills, N.C., three sisters, Rachel Sawyer of Hertford, N.C., Dawn Lane of Tyner, N.C. and Myrtle Hendricks-Corrales of McLean, Va. and an extended family of aunts, cousins, nieces, nephews and in-laws.

A memorial service was conducted at 3 p.m. Wednesday, July 16, 2008 at the Unitarian-Universalist Fellowship of the Peninsula, 415 Youngs Mill Lane, Newport News, Va.

William Bennett Sr.

SUNBURY n William Grant Bennett Sr., a native of Gates County, died July 10, 2008 at Albemarle Hospital.

Bennett was a member of Lebanon Grove Missionary Baptist Church.

Survivors include nine daughters, Angela Bennett, Donna Bennett and Tammy Bennett , all of Newport News, Va., Cortez Jones of the home, Tonya Bennett of Tyner, Dora Bennett and Marsha Dunkin, both of Waterbury, CT, Kim Johnson of Hertford and Pamela Bacchus of Durham; six sons, Joe Bennett, Darren Bennett, Ernest Jordan, Christopher Jordan, William Grant Bennett Jr., all of Waterbury, CT and Timmy Jordan of Elizabeth City; two sisters, Lee Holmes and Joan Cain, both of Waterbury; two brothers, Joe Bennett Jr. of Middletown and James Bennett of Gatesville; 36 grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Noah L. Eason

BELVIDERE – Noah Linwood Eason, 75, died July 10, 2008.

A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Thursday in Winslow Grove AME Zion Church. Stallings Memorial Chapel is in charge.

Hester Narron

INMAN, SC – Hester Delbridge Narron, 75, a native of Johnston County, died July 15, 2008, at his home.

Narron was employed in education as a principal in Bertie, Montgomery and Union Counties, NC, and as Director of Transportation, Spartanburg County School District 2 in SC. He was a member of the Ruritan Club in Bertie County.

A celebration of his life will be conducted at 11 a.m. Thursday at United Methodist Church of the Covenant, conducted by the Rev. Arthur Holt and Dr. Charles Barrett. Burial will be in Boiling Springs Memorial Gardens. Calvin Williams

ROANOKE RAPIDS n Calvin Cooledge Williams, 75, died July 15, 2008 at Halifax Regional Medical Center, Roanoke Rapids.

A visitation will be held from 6-7 p.m. Friday in the Roanoke Rapids Chapel of H.D. Pope Funeral Home. A funeral will be conducted at 11 a.m. Saturday at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Littleton, by the Rev. C.E. McCullom. Interment will be in the Williams family cemetery.

Josephine A. Artis

RICHMOND, Va. n Josephine A. Artis, died July 15, 2008 at her residence.

She was a member of the Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority and National Education Association. She was assistant principal with the Chesterfield Public School System in Richmond.

Survivors include her mother, Barbara Jean Clinard and stepfather, Lorenzo, both of Greensboro; her father and stepmother, Alexander and Sandra Smith of Woodland; two brothers, James Artis of Greensboro and Alex Edwards of Woodland; two sisters, Janet Askew of Greensboro and Julia Artis of Ahoskie; her grandmother, Dorthalia Smith of Aulander; her grandmother, Dorthalia Smith of Aulander; and grandfather, Joe Henry Artis of Aulander.
