RICH SQUARE – A Northampton County teen has been sentenced for a crime he committed here earlier this year.

Deangelo Newsome, 19 of Garysburg, was sentenced to a minimum of 60 months to a maximum of 81 months (or five to seven years) in the North Carolina Department of Corrections for his part in a mugging that occurred in February.

A jury found Newsome guilty of assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury and robbery with a dangerous weapon.

Superior Court Judge Steve Balog handed down the sentencing on July 9 in Jackson.

The case stems from a mugging that occurred February 15 in the Drew Avenue/Judith

Street area in Rich Square

Newsome, along with Tyshawn Williams, 16 of Rich Square, approached a male victim in a white Honda Passport SUV.

The two teens exited the vehicle, one of them brandishing a dark colored revolver. The gun was pointed in the victim’s face and at one point during the robbery the victim was struck in the face by the weapon and pushed to the ground.

Two hundred dollars in cash was stolen from the victim. The victim sustained facial injuries from the attack

Williams’ trial has been continued until the next term of Northampton County Superior Court slated to begin in September.
